DMX

Year: 2005

Runtime: 00:26:33

Making an appearance at the sixth annual Smokeout Festival in San Bernardino, California, was multi-platinum rap artist DMX. The only rap artist to have five consecutive platinum and number one albums simultaneously, DMX performs some of his most popular jams in this final performance before his decision to concentrate on his acting career. See the King of Rap perform his most powerful thug-life anthems, "Who We Be" and "Ya'll Gonna Make Me Lose My Mind," plus two of his biggest hits, "X Gonna Give It To Ya" and "Kaido." In this show, DMX ignites the live crowd like no other rapper can, and demonstrates how he became one of the prime forces behind mainstream Hip Hop's return to street realism during the late '90s.

  • Me Myself and I

    De La Soul

    Year: 1996

    Runtime: 55 min

With their clever, surrealistic lyrics, inventive use of sampling and incorporating an eclectic mix of reggae, funk, jazz, fashion and psychedelia into their sound, New York-based DE LA SOUL are one of the most original and influential groups on the hip hop scene. Singing about peace and love rather than about sleaze and violence like most of their considerably more hardcore rap contemporaries, De La Soul come across as modern day hippies, an image which found favor with rock audiences. Hailed on their arrival on the scene in 1989 as the future of hip hop, De La Soul were quickly perceived as the leaders of a contingent of New York-based alternative rappers who dubbed themselves The Native Tongues Posse. This movement for a while looked as if it was going to eclipse hardcore hip hop in terms of popularity. This concert, filmed at the 1997 Lokerse Festival, features their hits 'Me, Myself And I' (with its sample of Funkadelic's '(Not Just) Knee Deep'), 'Ring, Ring, Ring' and 'Breakadawn'.

  • Kiss of Death Tour 2005

    Jadakiss

    Year: 2005

    Runtime: 1 hr 3 min

Considered by many to be at his best in a live setting as apposed to the studio, Jadakiss is very much in his element in this spectacular set filmed in London in 2005. It features highlights and hits from his recent solo work as well as his earlier recordings made with The Lox and The Ruff Ryders. The set includes the hits, 'Time's Up', 'Knock Yourself Out', 'U Make Me Wanna', 'We Gonna Make It' (his instant underground classic about street mayhem), 'Put Ya Hands Up' and 'Why'. The last-named caused uproar over its linking George Bush with a 9/11 conspiracy theory and was banned and censored by US radio stations. Despite his tough and uncompromising social and political songs, often with inspired lyrics dealing with everyday life on the mean streets - guns, drug-dealing and robbery and suchlike - they have nevertheless crossed over into the pop mainstream.

  • Scene Not Heard: Woman in Philadelphia Hip Hop

    Various Artists

    Year: 2005

    Runtime: 45 min

Philadelphia is often referred to as the mecca for American soul music, however its contributions to hip-hop have been overlooked despite its mass proliferation of artists, many of whom have made landmark contributions as emcees, graffiti artists, dancers, and most notable as deejays. Native talents such as Will Smith, The Roots, and Eve have become international pop stars and made great strides domestically and internationally, but somehow "the Illadelph" still doesn't get the kind of props of a city like Los Angeles or even Atlanta.

Despite all of this, the City of Brotherly Love has continued to churn out some of the most innovative hip-hop artists of the current generation. Perhaps one of the most unique aspects to the scene is the abundance of powerful female voices that it has produced as artists, promoters and writers. In this debut featurette, director and producer Maori Karmael Holmes seeks to tell the story of these women-the legends, the famed, and the ingénues-as they struggle to succeed in a male-dominated industry in a city that has been left behind in the national consciousness.

SCENE NOT HEARD features interviews with some of the originators of hip-hop such as Lady B, Schoolly D, Monie Love and Rennie Harris, with vanguards chiming in including Bahamadia and Ursula Rucker, and presents current talents such as the Jazzyfatnastees, Ms. Jade, and Lady Alma, and emerging talents such as Versus, Keen of Subliminal Orphans and Michele Byrd-McPhee of Montäzh, as well as scholars, critics and local promoters.

  • Favela Rising

    Anderson Sá

    Year: 2005

    Runtime: 1 hr 22 min

This documentary follows one man's efforts to better his own life and the community he calls home. Anderson Sá grew up in the ghettos of Rio de Janeiro (known locally as "favelas"), where drug dealing, gangs, corrupt police officials, and violence were a common part of daily life. However, Sá came to realize that the life he was living was a dead end, and gave up selling drugs and gang life to become a community activist. Sa also had musical talent, as did a handful of like-minded friends, and together they began fusing the energy and immediacy of hip-hop with the hypnotic grooves of reggae, creating a new sound called afro-reggae in the process. Favela Rising follows Sá and his comrades as they share the story of his violent past, his vision of a better future for the favelas of Brazil, and the crucial message behind their music.
