  • Band In Seattle: Episode 224

    Electric NoNo / Julia Massey

    Year: 2016

    Runtime: 23 min

"How can such a big sound come from just two people?" This is what you will be asking yourself upon hearing Electric NoNo for the first time. Aside from "delivering a punch harder than Crispin cider" (train wreck'd society), you will find well-crafted albums, giant singable hooks, and a live show that will make you once again believe in the power of rock.
Julia Massey & The Five Finger Discount is a sweetly trippy, magical musical trio led by dreamy flaxen-blonde vocalist/keyboardist Julia and flanked by her happily-raging rhythm section, Matt Deason (bass) and Dominic Cortese (drums).
Julia and Matt and Dom share a deep passion for pho between playing their own private festivals - while also playing out at legendary Seattle venues like the Triple Door and the Showbox (along with the Tractor, Sunset, and Barboza) with similarly adept and inspired artists as Camille Bloom, Robb Benson, Red Jacket Mine, Carla Torgerson, Wayne Horvitz, the Hoot Hoots, the Great Um, and many others.

  • Band In Seattle: Season 3 Concert 9

    Hounds of the Wild Hunt

    Year: 2017

    Runtime: 41 min

It all started when Nicky Anderson responded to Jonny Henningson’s call for a guitar player when they were teenagers, and Hounds of the Wild Hunt was born. Later Ryan Devlin joined the band, then Cary Davis, and this band’s raw, unadulterated garage rock came to be close to what it is today. They’ve been through a lot since those teenage years, including – but not limited to – changing their name from the Whore Moans to now Hounds of the Wild Hunt.

His visceral, reflective lyrics build against more traditional rock and pop arrangements to weave stories that resonate with audiences from coast to coast.
Whitney Lyman is a composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist from Seattle. She blends influences from traditional world folk, baroque chamber music, indie rock, and dream pop creating ethereal soundscapes and cinematic visuals.

Paula Boggs has been many things in her life – a former Starbucks executive, lawyer, KEXP board member, and an army officer. But those experiences have led her to where she is today – a singer-songwriter. If you could say one thing about Paula Boggs, it’s that she doesn’t fit into any kind of a box. It’s Seattle-brewed soulgrass, as she calls it.

  • Band in Seattle: Live Debut

    Posse

    Year: 2016

    Runtime: 34 min

Posse is so unbelievably cool. With dreamy soundscapes and stark, deadpan vocals, Posse makes perfect rainy day music. They write the kind of songs that would honestly fit well over some self-effacing John Cusack monologue. Their sound is signature Seattle, but not pretentious in the slightest. With lyrics so layered and melodies so subtle, Posse’s songs take up a lot of real estate in your brain and refuse to leave.

If you took the stage presence and theatrics of Devo and David Bowie, the spaghetti western themes of Ennio Morricone, and a voice deeper than Johnny Cash, then you’ve got Brent Amaker and the Rodeo. They’re an actual Tarantino movie in music form. Stetsons and all, this troupe of cowboys are in a league all their own. You’d be hard up to find a band around here that puts on more of a show than Brent Amaker and the Rodeo.

  • Band In Seattle: Evening Bell

    Various Artists

    Year: 2017

    Runtime: 54 min

There’s a song that Evening Bell plays, called “Dust Storm,” which says way more about their music than anything else. When one hears Evening Bell, it’s hard not to picture a tumble weed skimming around a desert somewhere in Tucson circa whenever John Wayne was a movie star. It’s vintage Americana at its finest, but with a dark and psychedelic twist – music fit for a ghost town overtaken by Saguaro cacti, and perhaps cows.

  • Baroque Dance Unmasked

    Various Artists

    Year: 2011

    Runtime: 48 min

Baroque Dance Unmasked, Workshop to Performance, directed by Catherine Turocy, the renowned Artistic Director of The New York Baroque Dance Company provides a rare look at the artistic process of re-creating dance from a rich historic era. The film includes information about music, fencing, mask work, notation, costumes and the inner life of dance performers working in this dance style, and contains rare footage of Catherine discussing her unique approach to recovering period dance. It also includes music commentary by conductor/harpsichordist James Richman; historical fencing by Master teachers Ramon Martinez and Michael Hewer; mask work with Arne Zaslove; Feuillet notation with Italian early dance specialist Deda Cristina Colonna, as well as comments from performer/teacher perspectives covering choreography, castanets and costumes. The video also features brilliant performance excerpts which reveal the most important theatrical dance styles of the 18th century: the danse heroique, the demi-caractère, and the comic/grotesque style. The performance excerpts are from the dance-drama: “With Sword Drawn He Dances”. The dancers are in period costume and perform with an original instrument ensemble. This dance-drama was written and directed by Catherine Turocy and filmed by the Dance Collection of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts as part of the program: National Initiative to Preserve America’s Dance.
