Although their carefully crafted lite rock would have a hard time getting airplay these days, the 1980s were kind to groups like Toto. When the band debuted, Kenny Loggins was a sex symbol and the public yearned to fix Mr. Mister's broken wings. Synthesized love songs were topping the charts, and ex-studio musicians Toto knew how to hit the right keys. Their 1982 hits, "Rosanna" (an ode to Rosanna Arquette, guitarist Steve Lukather's then-girlfriend) and the broken hearted, I-blame-myself "I Won't Hold You Back" helped their fourth album, Toto IV, become a top ten hit. Once they'd held a lighter for the lite rock path and swept six Grammies for Toto IV, the band realized there's no place like home and left the world of original rock to work again as studio musicians.

Live in Amsterdam
Runtime: 1 hr 44 minToto may be past its prime as a multi-platinum recording band, but Live in Amsterdam offers abundant proof that their performances are as electrifying as ever. Recorded in Amsterdam's Heineken Music Hall on February 17, 2003, near the end of Toto's 25th anniversary world tour, this dynamic concert serves as a cheerful reminder that Toto have been alive and well and recording steadily since 1978. The band's 2002 release Through the Looking Glass was an album of covers, two of which are welcomed here: "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is a prime showcase for guitarist Steve Lukather, and "Bodhisattva" is a tight, meticulous tribute to Toto's original drummer, the late Jeff Porcaro, and his classic sessions with Steely Dan. The mega-hits "Africa," "Rosanna," and "Hold the Line" are perfectly executed, and in a band full of talented singers, lead vocalist Bobby Kimball sounds better than ever. Two impressive medleys show the band in full gear as a comfortable unit of seasoned professionals, highlighted by impeccable work from keyboardist David Paich, bassist Mike Poracaro, and ace drummer Simon Phillips (who also produced and mixed this recording for this program). And while 35 minutes of Porcaro's backstage home-video might seem frivolous, it shows a band that's still having fun, as reflected in the beaming smiles of their appreciative Amsterdam audience.

Remarkably, its principle members developed successful solo careers in parallel with the band’s.
With full access to the key players, including Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, the film recounts an extraordinary musical story .
They were British public school boys, whose experimental progressive rock band, led by Peter Gabriel, attracted for much of the 1970s a fervent, mainly young male, following. But then in the 1980s, the Phil Collins-led Genesis kicked into an altogether different, more pop, sound , attracting a massive following - including many young women fans . In the process, they became one the most successful bands in the world. Their 1986 album “Invisible Touch”, for example, produced five US top ten singles including number one with the title song.
