Genesis

The continual evolution of Genesis helps distinguish them from their Prog Rock contemporaries. Love them or hate them, this band is nothing if not multi-faceted. Original vocalist Peter Gabriel began to innovatively flex his lyrical and performance muscle on such early '70s albums as Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound. In concert, allegedly to combat shyness, he would wear masks and make-up, use props, and tell stories. Gabriel ended his relationship with the band in 1975, following the release of the incredibly ambitious double album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. When drummer Phil Collins took over vocal duties, Genesis grew to be one of the biggest-selling acts of the '80s, slowly shifting away from art rock and toward highly-produced, pop-oriented fare designed for mass consumption. Genesis still march on today with another singer in tow (Ray Wilson) and compilation releases of rarities and previously unavailable material.

  • Sum Of The Parts

    Genesis

    Year: 2014

    Runtime: 1 hr 30 min

This is a feature-length documentary about Genesis - one of the most successful bands in rock history. And also one of the most vilified. A band that almost died in the mid-1970s with the loss of its leader ; it then survived a change of lead singer and style to storm the charts in the 1980s. Remarkably, its principle members developed successful solo careers in parallel with the band’s.

With full access to the key players, including Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, the film recounts an extraordinary musical story .

They were British public school boys, whose experimental progressive rock band, led by Peter Gabriel, attracted for much of the 1970s a fervent, mainly young male, following. But then in the 1980s, the Phil Collins-led Genesis kicked into an altogether different, more pop, sound , attracting a massive following - including many young women fans . In the process, they became one the most successful bands in the world. Their 1986 album “Invisible Touch”, for example, produced five US top ten singles including number one with the title song.

    Genesis

    Year: 1981

    Runtime: 1 hr 23 min

"Three Sides Live" was filmed in November 1981 on the "Abacab" tour in North America. Originally filmed in 16mm, the footage has now been fully restored. The show focuses on tracks from the "Duke" and "Abacab" albums and the tracks are intercut with behind the scenes footage and interviews with the band members. As ever with Genesis, the show is visually stunning and it captures the band in their transition from their progressive days in the seventies through to the hugely successful pop/rock act they became from the mid-eighties onwards.
