Foals
Through brassy spikes of a horn section and the detailed twists of pseudo Afro-pop guitar, it's almost easy to forget that Britain's Foals are, at heart, a dance-rock band. Guitarist Yannis Philippakis and drummer Jack Bevan were childhood pals in Oxford who played together in a math rock outfit called the Edmund Fitzgerald. They evolved into Foals in 2006 when they were joined by guitarist Jimmy Smith, bassist Walter Gervers and, briefly, vocalist Andrew Mears. When Mears left the group to concentrate on his own project, Youthmovies, Philippakis grabbed the mic, and the band developed the sharp-edged, broad-minded dance rock that dominates their 2008 long-playing debut, Antidotes.

A Session With Foals
Foals
Year: 2013
Runtime: 12 min
Being from the rain-ridden lands of England, Foals are used to a different kind of festival environment: generally speaking, frontman Yannis Philippakis described them as "mud and wellies" ordeals. So we're sure they were quite pleased to travel halfway around the world to the California desert to perform for Coachella's music-hungry crowds. Prior to taking to the stage in Indio, however, Foals made a pit stop at our little poolside bungalow to perform a Festival Fever Session featuring songs off their highly-acclaimed, recent full-length Holy Fire. While you might have already seen the band's in-the-flesh transformation of "My Number" into a slow-burning beaut, we've expanded the session to include the subtle closer "Moon".

Live at the Crystal Ballroom
The Black Keys
Year: 2008
Runtime: 1 hr 4 min
The Black Keys' new concert film, Live at the Crystal Ballroom, reflects the no-frills genius of the drums-and-guitar duo's studio sound: It's a refreshingly straightforward video document of their April 4, 2008 sold-out gig at Portland, Oregon's Crystal Ballroom, featuring seventeen songs culled from all five of the pair's albums. Director Lance Bangs - who has made videos for the Arcade Fire, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sonic Youth as well as directing R.E.M.'s Road Movie - keeps his small camera crew focused on the stage, getting up close and sweaty with guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney. Occasionally, he'll pull back to acknowledge the head-bobbing crowd pressed close to the stage, their hands reaching out to Auerbach. There are no visual pyrotechnics, no elaborate editing, no backstage cutaways, yet the show is riveting from start to finish and the feel of the music in that room is nothing less than triumphant. -

Live at The Cutting Room
Alt-J
Year: 2012
Runtime: 22 min
There is something truly unique about the music that pours out of the four lads who comprise the experimental, indie outfit, Alt-J. It has a sparkling, melodious quality in the way the guitars fizzle in a bed of digital mist. But there are odd chanting harmonies, crunchy riffs that'll snap your teeth, and, most notably, a disjointed, percussive approach that's mightier than all. It's all helped to stew a bit of a phenomenon on the band's side of the Atlantic. Why just today the band snatched themselves a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize for their debut, An Awesome Wave (which is just about the best way to describe what lies within). Here in the US, the band is currently spreading the gospel one city at a time. Recently, that meant a quick stop at The Cutting Room Studios in NYC for a live-to-air session with our friends at KEXP Seattle. In its' aftermath, we're obviously converted...and we don't think you stand a chance either. -

Live at The Bowery Ballroom
Local Natives
Year: 2010
Runtime: 32 min
In the exclusive concert performance video we captured on the first night of the band's stint in NYC, the synergetic spirit that binds the band together is evident enough. Clearly, this is not a tribe who are comfortable with their work merely being good enough. Self confessed "control freaks;" the band and their music is the result of a communal creative process. Watching their interpretation of the Talking Heads' "Warning Sign," it's no great stretch to envision the band spending whole evenings working through single vocal passages. The rhythmic pounce of " Wide Eyes" offers a picture of the band studiously aligning cut and paste, percussive contributions so that each hit can synch with one another. And "Sun Hands" speaks to the band's efforts in holding back during one moment, so that another one can ultimately be that much more explosive. Dramatic, endearing, energetic, and impressive: we know you're going to love what is one of the most exciting bands we have ever had the pleasure to capture.
