Imagine pointing some beautiful, vintage Mustang convertible down a Middle American highway for a moment. There's a sea of endless prairies and plains stretching out around you. The road; a streak of concrete into the horizon, where the only evidence of civilization exists clustered around gas stations and dive bars at the interstate off ramp. Curiosity gets the best of you and with a flick of the turn signal you're veering off the road right for that roadhouse a place where bikers, truck drivers, and local meat/metal heads, bad ass farmers' daughters, and working-class factory folk all gather when the sun goes down. It's kind of an ultimate American image, right? Shrouded in Red, White, and Blue, cheap beer, and the stench of strong whiskey. And of course there's a band; a swaggering, semi-drunk cyclone of country, blues, folk, and rock whipping all of those colorful characters into an absolute fury. Requires a vivid imagination, I know. But the band? They're very real. They're The Wild Feathers and they're pretty much here to kick your ass.

    Following their weekend residency as Newport Folk Festival's house band, Deer Tick shot down to Manhattan to perform for the Baeble crew in our backyard. The Providence locals hosted and headlined the festival's three consecutive after parties at the Newport Blues Cafe, and on the third evening, the group performed their forthcoming studio record Negativity in its entirety. The following day, frontman John McCauley told us that he couldn't wait until September 23rd, which would be the eve of the album's release. Fast forward a month and a half, and here we all are today, session video in tow, with the impending release of their superb, fifth record less than 24 hours away.

    Passenger

    Mike Rosenberg's crafted some of the very best observational songwriting of the year with his lovely new album, All the Little Lights. It's a lush, acoustic collection he's complemented with the perfect epithet in Passenger. "The lyrics and the stories," explains the young, Brighton-born-and-bred musician, "are told from the perspective of a passenger just watching the world go by." For his stirring session in our music room, Mike spun tales of a lonely afternoon on a riverbank in Glasgow Scotland ("Feather On the Clyde"), the hard appreciation that spawns only in the wake of personal loss ("Let Her Go") and a reminder that the present moment is everything ("Life's for the Living"). It's an emotional performance; a journey you'll be grateful to be a passenger aboard.

    Blitzen Trapper

    Year: 2007

    Blitzen Trapper's music went through various genres with each record, bouncing from indie folk to art rock to experimental folk before settling into a rich, dusty brand of Neil Young-inspired alt country. The band formed in 2000 in Portland, Oregon, with songwriter Eric Earley leading a lineup that also included Erik Menteer (guitar, keyboard), Brian Adrian Koch (drums, vocals), Michael Van Pelt (bass), Drew Laughery (keyboard), and Marty Marquis (keyboard, vocals). Before signing a record contract in 2007, the band released three albums on its own dime: an eponymous effort in 2003, Field Rexx in 2005, and the highly acclaimed Wild Mountain Nation in 2007. The latter album landed the group a record deal with Sub Pop.

    Being from the rain-ridden lands of England, Foals are used to a different kind of festival environment: generally speaking, frontman Yannis Philippakis described them as "mud and wellies" ordeals. So we're sure they were quite pleased to travel halfway around the world to the California desert to perform for Coachella's music-hungry crowds. Prior to taking to the stage in Indio, however, Foals made a pit stop at our little poolside bungalow to perform a Festival Fever Session featuring songs off their highly-acclaimed, recent full-length Holy Fire. While you might have already seen the band's in-the-flesh transformation of "My Number" into a slow-burning beaut, we've expanded the session to include the subtle closer "Moon".

    Surfer Blood

    This particular show was captured on a sticky summer night June of 2010 at the Daniel Street club in Milford Connecticut. Though filming in an unfamiliar setting yielded a somewhat tricky production, what follows is a honest, on-stage (and, towards the end...off) account of one of 2010's most exciting bands. Here Surfer Blood take to tangy, sun kissed fret work and stomp the pedal box moments of grit...the band's raw guitar crunch seeping into a heavy sway of multiple, percussive elements. At the helm of the group, John Paul (JP) Pitts flaunts flailing, haphazard kind of vocals, high on reverb and coloring outside the melodious lines like some newbie version of Stephen Malkmus. Not surprisingly, it's a sound that reminisces more of early 90s buzz bin bands than the contemporary indie fixation with weird electronic acrobatics; a refreshing, throwback spin that has felt very of the moment all year long.

    In the exclusive concert performance video we captured on the first night of the band's stint in NYC, the synergetic spirit that binds the band together is evident enough. Clearly, this is not a tribe who are comfortable with their work merely being good enough. Self confessed "control freaks;" the band and their music is the result of a communal creative process. Watching their interpretation of the Talking Heads' "Warning Sign," it's no great stretch to envision the band spending whole evenings working through single vocal passages. The rhythmic pounce of " Wide Eyes" offers a picture of the band studiously aligning cut and paste, percussive contributions so that each hit can synch with one another. And "Sun Hands" speaks to the band's efforts in holding back during one moment, so that another one can ultimately be that much more explosive. Dramatic, endearing, energetic, and impressive: we know you're going to love what is one of the most exciting bands we have ever had the pleasure to capture.

    Since storming on to the scene in '06, TPC have honed in on the kind of proper, pop chops that have given them the inside track on this here music industry of ours. Theirs' are tunes that come packaged with a host of tasty touches hiding inside: acrobatic swirls of guitar, warm and woozy swells of synthesizer, and of course, Dave Monks' endearing, boy next door vocal delivery at the helm of the quartet.

    White Denim

    The jam indie rock trio White Denim hail from Austin, Texas, where bandmates Josh Block (drums), Steve Terebecki (bass), and James Petralli (guitars, vocals) first set up shop in 2005. All three members were veterans of the Austin scene; Block and Petralli had previously played together in the alt-rock band Parque Torche, while Terebecki was a member of Peach Train. Drawing from a number of punk and garage rock influences, the group fashioned a hard-hitting sound with crunchy guitar riffs and frantic energy.

    Deerhunter

    Year: 2008

    Oftentimes at live shows, musicians of the indie-rock variety get so caught up in all the strut and swagger that goes along with rock music that they forget to be fun. Deerhunter are not that, as evidenced by their performance here at McCarren Park Pool. On the contrary, front man Bradford Cox is a pretty damn funny guy. And while he may look like a young Thurston Moore without the flowing hair, Deerhunter opt out of your typical art-rock arrogance and instead go for a sonically sound show complete with a driving rhythm section and extra catchy guitar riffs. There's even a nutty vocal spot from Cole Alexander of The Black Lips. Top it off with some psychedelic effects and a pretty rhythm guitarist in cheerleader garb, and you've got yourself a Deerhunter performance that's way too fun to miss out on.

    We aim to keep track of the most buzzed about indie groups, and we're confident in our assessment that Scottish synth-pop trio CHVRCHES will continue to coast atop the crest of of the indie wave. Fronted by their pixie-like frontwoman, Lauren Mayberry, the group caught attention with their Recover EP, which stormed our sound waves with its gripping synth rhythms and enslaving party choruses.

    We were initially surprised to see such a fervent turnout of faithful fans for the newcomer's show at the I Guess I'm Floating/YVYNYL party at Hype Machine's Hype Hotel down in Austin, Texas. But after being quickly acclimated to the group's commanding performance, we were singing right along with their most devoted admirers. We urge you to watch their performance below, and dare you to avoid becoming a member of the rapidly growing CHVRCHES legion.

    Counting Crows, and Adam Duritz in particular, have become renowned for the energetic, passionate nature of their live performances. Duritz frequently extends and rewrites songs live, adding extra verses or alternate middle sections and/or endings, sometimes fitting most of another of the band's other songs into the middle of the first. This intimate live performance gives the fans the chance to see the band perform their best hits.

    Despite the shortness of their set, the collective brought together orchestral coordination, all the spirit and technical proficiency of their album and a ton of joyous presence to make everyone in the audience a believer.

    In the past year The Milk Carton Kids have been nominated for a Grammy, appeared on Austin City Limits and Prairie Home Companion multiple times, performed at the Americana Music Awards, and appeared at T-Bone Burnett and the Coen Bros triumphant Inside Llewyn Davis concert at New York's Town Hall, later televised in a Showtime special. As the thousands of fans who have seen the band can attest, their live performance and between-song banter add a charming counterpoint to the music. Preserving the band's unique show for posterity, Live From Lincoln Theatre will appeal to both fans who have seen the band and want to relive the experience and the thousands of new fans encountering them on NPR and elsewhere who have yet to see them. live.

Here though, in our latest session vid, the band try on something different...something a bit more informal and intimate. With nothing more than their mighty harmonies and an acoustic guitar, the band gives a glimpse into their most private world with three cuts from Nothing Is Wrong, emulating those moments when guitars are pulled out on tour buses, in hotel rooms, or quiet backstage retreats. After all, Dawes are a traveling band, the kind of group that can't go without that pounding pavement rumbling under their tires. The road, after all, is the greatest musical tradition.

    Beach Fossils

    The release of their self-titled LP in 2010 introduced the world to Beach Fossils' Dick Dale twanged, New Wave inspired surf rock: a frenetic sound, although then unique, has now become quite prevalent in the indie scene. But where this Brooklyn-based four-piece set themselves apart was through their Johnny Rotten-esque turbulent attitutes: a trait that's been upheld in their 2013 sophomore folow-up, Clash the Truth. Led by the melancholic growl of Dustin Payseur, Beach Fossils embody a liveliness and urgency that's shared by a majority of their generation. We witnessed this energy live in Austin at Hype Machine's Hype Hotel. We suggest sticking around til the final minutes to see the extent of Beach Fossils' volatility - where an explosive bout ends with a crippled drum kit.

Reflecting less on the travels and travails borne of the wanderlust struck musician, instead, The Rip Tide has crystallized the sounds of Beiruts past into a cohesive and remarkable whole, all while maintaining the unmistakable aesthetic that has brought them around the world, and home again.

    Ra Ra Riot. Such an appropriate name. The cheerleader-esque "Ra ra" chant evokes images of high school, all of which can be found in this youthful band. You've got your photogenic prom queens on violin and cello. Your shaggy-haired Drama Club Stud on vocals. Your lovable athletic jock on drums. Your wacky class clowns on guitar and bass. And there's the "Riot" part, which comes close to describing this six-piece's blend of controlled chaos. The songs combine distorted guitar, fat bass, keyboards, orchestrated strings, and vocals. Mix the Arcade Fire with Devo and some coverpage-worthy good looks, and you wouldn't be too far from Ra Ra Riot's enjoyable racket.

    Ra Ra Riot are on an alluring career trajectory. The band has gone from small-town favorites to big stage stars, and their recent swing through our city for four nights at both The Bowery Ballroom and The Music Hall of Williamsburg seemed the perfect time to capture their ascent.

    Starting off as contemporaries to bands like Vampire Weekend, Ra Ra Riot has been something of a slow burner, choosing to develop and nurture a sound rather than cashing in on one, quick aesthetic. Following the release of their polished, Chris Walla produced sophomore album The Orchard, the band now find themselves at a point of promise. The intricacies of their arrangements rival many of the so-called art-rockers, with heaps more accessibility. While The Orchard dropped hooks for heady, reverberated decorations, the ornate finish provides a complimentary side to a band still building its foundation.

    Recently, the band released The Century of Self on their own independent Richter Scale imprint. Rich, sophisticated, complex, yet ultimately articulate; Century of Self is deep in scope, straining themes of mythology, mysticism, and nature through its' collection of anthemic, hard rock.

    Hence the dramatic undertaking in bringing these epic songs to life in the live setting. And thank god for it... The band's unwavering commitment to doing The Century of Self justice translated into a kinetic kind of performance; one that sent an undeniable synergy buzzing 'bout the building the moment the band walked on stage. With fists in the air, sporadic mosh pit eruptions, and even a bit of crowd surfing (by audience and band members alike).
