Like many of today's more successful jam bands, Widespread Panic earned their merit badges through arduous touring. Their music mixes brash southern rock tones with loose and lofty jazz touches that seamlessly merge with boogie-heavy blues riffs, creating songs that take you on earthy journeys into realms of joyous dance frenzy. Although their first single, Coconut Image was cut in 1986, the origins of the band go back four years prior to that when singer John Bell met up with six-string sultan Mike Houser while studying in Athens, Georgia. The duo was soon rounded out by bass man Dave Schools, keyboard player JoJo Hermann, drummer Todd Nance and percussionist Sunny Ortiz. Their debut album Space Wrangler came out two years later following Coconut Image. It seemed appropriate that they kicked off the show with "Postcards," with its line: This town is nuts, my kind of place, I dont want to leave. Given the love the band and fans have for Red Rocks shows, it sometimes feels like they could simply play every summer show there and the fans would journey from around the country to see them.
On "Ribs and Whiskey," lead guitarist Jimmy Herring picked piercing trills over lead vocalist John Bells sultry, lazy slide playing while bassist Dave Schools laid down a funky groove underneath. Out of a long jam, percussionist Domingo Sunny Ortiz took a little solo and then locked in with Schools on the intro to the instrumental, "Party At Your Mama's House."
As the band closed out with a fiery "Radio Child," Bell stepped up and said they'd see everybody tomorrow night. The amphitheater then got turned into a disco, as the house lights mimicked a disco ball and the PA blared Michael Jacksons "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," a perfect backing track for fans to dance down to their cars.

By the time the band took the stage at 7:50 p.m., the energy among the fans was electric. Panic wasted no time delivering the goods, opening with a one-two punch of "Sometimes" and "North." Dave Schools stepped up with a bass break during the former, and lead guitarist Jimmy Herring and keyboardist John "JoJo" Hermann traded singing solos and rolling fills on the latter.

Runtime: 1 hr 11 minFrom the opening note of "Wondering" all the way through to the set closing "Conrad," the band owned the opportunity. Sandwiched in between the opener and a divine "C. Brown," a very leggy "Surprise Valley" overwhelmed the crowd with an almost-anthemic presence. "Kiss the mountain air we breathe" sounds good standing anywhere, but beneath "ship" and "Creation" rocks it evoked magic. All weekend the boys in the band had worn smiling faces, but early in the day it was easy to see that Sunday "Funday" was going to be enchanting.
Words can difficultly describe the bands energy on this last day. As the band masterfully wielded a "Bowlegged Woman" into "Lawyers, Guns and Money," it started to become apparent that the second set would be no ordinary picnic. Call them fan favorites, Halloween treats, illustrious tour gems, whatever you want, but don't expect to hear "Mama Told Me Not to Come," "Knocking Around the Zoo" and "Walk On" in consecutive order too often. The only seemingly botched moment in the whole afternoon was a "Guilded Splinters" that by most standards was still great but just seemed to be lost for a bit before being revitalized by some
