  • Band In seattle - In Cahoots Concert 221

    In Cahoots

    Year: 2016

    Runtime: 41 min

Finding a rock band in Seattle these days is a bit of an oddity, but one with catchy and infectious songs that stick in your head is rarer still. Seattle Washington's In Cahoots is exactly that kind of band. They will be releasing their 4th album in March, Dogland which was recorded at the legendary Hall of Justice Studios with producer Andy Park.
This feisty quartet, is lead by guitar-wielding chanteuse Christina Crammer — a vigilant disciple of Joan Jett, Chrissie Hynde and Debbie Harry. Christina's soaring vocals have a beautiful mix of "vixen and venom" that highlight her clever songwriting skills. The other members of In Cahoots (Rich Huston on bass, Brad Judy on lead guitar, and Dave Crossett on drums) provide a solid background to the mixture of old-school punk and classic-rock riffage — the songs setup her sing-along choruses in a powerful way.

  • Band In Seattle - Spellcaster Concert 221

    Spellcaster

    Year: 2016

    Runtime: 34 min

Hailing from the rain soaked streets of Portland, OR, Spellcaster has been hard at work making a name for themselves since the summer of 2009. The online release of their first demo, Spells of Speed, in February 2010 caught the eye of New York label Heavy Artillery Records, leading to their first record deal in April of the same year.
With the re-release of Spells of Speed via Heavy Artillery, the band began their first North American tour in October 2010, quickly followed by the release of their debut Under the Spell in 2011. Rigorous touring ensued as the band crossed the country promoting their music for the following 2 years. Sometime in 2012 a wall was hit, and it became apparent that a lineup change was imminent.
In early 2013, vocalist Thomas Adams and drummer Shad Covert departed the band, leading guitarist Tyler Loney to assume lead vocals duties. Guitarist Bryce R. VanHoosen and drummer Colin Vranizan were enlisted to complete the lineup. Shortly after, the band began writing their self-titled sophomore album, which – aside from a two-week west coast tour in summer – took up the entirety of 2013.
In December of the same year, the band entered Falcon & Audiosiege Studios in Portland, with Toxic Holocaust front man Joel Grind co-producing and engineering. After 3 months of constant tracking and mixing, their entirely self-funded album was completed in February. With their second album now complete, the band is preparing a thorough touring cycle throughout 2015 and the following year.

  • A Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan

    Various Artists

    Year: 1995

    Runtime: 1 hr 19 min

Already a legend among musicians, Stevie Ray Vaughan was bringing new relevance and popularity to the blues when his career was cut short in a fatal helicopter accident following a 1990 concert appearance. His music offered the drama and sheer firepower of rock, and his flamboyant live shows likewise proved well suited to arena-sized crowds, yet there was little argument that Vaughan's fealty to the blues remained at the core of his style. This 1996 concert tribute underscores that common denominator through muscular performances from contemporary blues masters who readily (and appropriately) confirm the Texas guitarist as a true peer--it's no small matter that bonafide influences Buddy Guy and B.B. King cite the honoree on an equal plane with Vaughan's most obvious rock forebear, Jimi Hendrix.

    Various Artists

    Year: 2017

    Runtime: 54 min

There’s a song that Evening Bell plays, called “Dust Storm,” which says way more about their music than anything else. When one hears Evening Bell, it’s hard not to picture a tumble weed skimming around a desert somewhere in Tucson circa whenever John Wayne was a movie star. It’s vintage Americana at its finest, but with a dark and psychedelic twist – music fit for a ghost town overtaken by Saguaro cacti, and perhaps cows.

  • Band In Seattle: Episode 218 Jupe Jupe and The Gods Themselves

    Various Artists

    Year: 2016

    Runtime: 22 min

The Gods Themselves are reminiscent of the male/female vocals of talking heads built on a punk foundation, yet their music is a fluid, ever-evolving sound. Astra Elane’s newfound independence as a lead guitarist has led her to evolve into a confident, engaging front woman. While listening to the rhythmic punching of the drums and the laidback guitar styling, audiences can be found closing their eyes, and just grooving to the punk-pop melodies of The Gods Themselves.
My Young creates a characterization of himself in every performance. He and his band mates make up a quartet of cerebral musicians whose sound is self-described as “mournful dance, new wave music”. Young’s rich vocals are suggestive of a Depeche Mode sound, but then it stands on a foundation of heavy synth, rough guitar, and pounding drum lines. Coupled with Young’s pointed lyrics, Jupe Jupe has discovered a whole new sound for their Pacific Northwest audience.

  • Beethoven: Piano Concerto No.1

    Various Artists

    Year: 2011

    Runtime: 41 min

In time for his 65th birthday in 2007, Daniel Barenboim has completed a cycle of Beethoven's
piano concertos. Recorded live at the prestigious Klavier-Festival Ruhr in May 2007, this
recording reflects both a very individual and special reading of Beethoven’s music and the
artist’s life-long dedication to the composer. Daniel Barenboim is one of the most prolific and
high-profile artists performing on international stages today and Beethoven’s masterpieces
have been a key part of his repertoire throughout his career, both as conductor and as pianist.
Beethoven himself was a keyboard virtuoso of almost awesome abilities who created a
sensation wherever he played. It is no wonder, therefore, that the piano was central to
Beethoven’s overall output. Daniel Barenboim, artistic personality and former wunderkind,
long an essential part of the international musical scene both on the conductor’s podium and
at the piano, is the perfect match for this demanding music. Conducting and playing at the
same time, Barenboim chose his orchestra of almost two decades, the Staatskapelle Berlin,
which he has praised warmly for its exceptional, dark and warm sound. With a tradition
reaching back to 1570, the Staatskapelle Berlin is one of the oldest orchestras in the world.
Barenboim plays Beethoven brings together two musical masterminds.

  • Bob Dylan: The 30th Anniversary Concert

    Various Artists

    Year: 1992

    Runtime: 3 hr 48 min

On October 16, 1992, New York City's hottest concert ticket was the live gathering of musical giants, legend and archetypes who'd come to Madison Square Garden to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Bob Dylan's first Columbia Records album and play a selection of Dylan songs—from culturally iconic (John Mellencamp's no-nonsense "Like A Rolling Stone") to bootleg obscure (Lou Reed's acerbic take on "Foot of Pride")—that had moved and inspired them over the decades. The four hour show, performed for a sold-out audience of more than 18,000 fans and live-cast around the world, brought together an unprecedented roster of artists and icons including Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, Lou Reed, The Clancy Brothers, Ritchie Havens, Johnny Winter, Roger McGuinn, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Ron Wood, Chrissie Hynde, The O'Jays, Eddie Vedder, Sinéad O'Connor, Tracy Chapman, George Harrison (then making his first US concert appearance in 18 years) and more. Providing musical backing throughout the show was an ensemble dream team featuring three members of Booker T. & The M.G.'s, G.E. Smith on guitar with Jim Keltner and Anton Fig on drums. Dubbed "Bobfest" on stage by a jubilant Neil Young, the 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration reached a transcendent crescendo with an unforgettable performance and all-star jam featuring the evening's honoree. Viewed anew from a 20-year perspective, Bob Dylan - The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration - Deluxe Edition is a remarkable testament to the enduring legacy and ongoing musical influence of Bob Dylan. That valedictory gathering from more than 20 years ago proved to be a mid-career retrospective of a recording artist and performer who continues to inform and transform the cultural landscape.

The Bridge School is an innovative organization educating children with severe speech and physical impairments. The Concert series began in 1986 when Pegi Young, co-founder of The Bridge School, enlisted her husband, Neil Young, and friends to play an all acoustic concert to benefit the Bridge School in its founding year. That concert, featuring Don Henley, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young started a tradition that has lasted to the present day. The 25th Anniversary Edition showcases some of the many highlights from the past 25 years, featuring 25 rare and acoustic performances from artists such as Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Bonnie Raitt, Metallica, The Who, and (of course) Neil Young. This film is a complex and passionate portrait of a woman who can only be described as a myth. Yet our objective is to get the truth which lies beyond the myth of this extraordinary performer – her sensitivity and vitality underscore her uncontested place as one of the greatest communicators of the Twentieth Century. The film unveils the human side of her personality as well as pay homage to her stunnung career.
Her ability to reach millions of devoted fans is not so much a result of her superb technical abilities and apparently limitless endurance, but mainly due to her ability to express her most sincere and deepest feelings.
While a composer may have created a masterwork, it is up to the interpreter to communicate the composer’s emotions to the public, to share their fears and moments of joy together. • Come Together: A Beatles Tribute

    Various Artists

    Year: 2014

    Runtime: 52 min

If music is the universal language, then the songs of the Beatles are its Rosetta Stone. Their compositions are an international language that crosses all borders and overrides cultural differences. Though they no longer exist as the Fab Four, their musical legacy lives on through generations of fans, and the thousands of tribute bands who "come together" worldwide, to interpret and perform their music. There are an estimated 8,000 Beatles tribute bands globally who perform at multiple Beatles festivals and conventions throughout the world. Shot almost entirely in Liverpool, the birthplace of The Beatles, and captured in HD during International Beatles Week, Come Together is a tribute to that legacy - a phenomena that shows no signs of stopping. Paul once said, "A hundred years from now, people will listen to the music of the Beatles the same way we listen to Mozart." Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. The lengths some tribute groups go to ranges from simple vocal harmonies, to what are affectionately called "Boots and Suits" bands. Regardless of nationality, they attempt to look and sound as close to the originals as possible. The result is a creative composite of musical expression. The documentary illustrates their diversification in sound and illusion. Come Together, moderated on-camera by John Lennon's sister, Julia Baird, captures that spirit, motivation, energy and interpretation through in-depth interviews, rare footage, stunning concert performances, and personal stories by bands and fans alike. People have come together from Tokyo to Stockholm to Las Vegas to share their love of the music of The Beatles and the positive and uplifting message it brings. This is their tribute to them as well.

  • Copyright Criminals

    Various Artists

    Year: 2009

    Runtime: 53 min

Copyright Criminals examines the creative and commercial value of musical sampling, including the related debates over artistic expression, copyright law, and (of course) money. This documentary traces the rise of hip-hop from the urban streets of New York to its current status as a multibillion-dollar industry. For more than thirty years, innovative hip-hop performers and producers have been re-using portions of previously recorded music in new, otherwise original compositions. When lawyers and record companies got involved, what was once referred to as a “borrowed melody” became a “copyright infringement.” The film showcases many of hip-hop music’s founding figures like Public Enemy, De La Soul, and Digital Underground—while also featuring emerging hip-hop artists from record labels Definitive Jux, Rhymesayers, Ninja Tune, and more. It also provides an in-depth look at artists who have been sampled, such as Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown’s drummer and the world’s most sampled musician), as well as commentary by another highly sampled musician, funk legend George Clinton. As artists find ever more inventive ways to insert old influences into new material, this documentary asks a critical question, on behalf of an entire creative community: Can you own a sound? USA Today calls Copyright Criminals "...a compelling and insightful documentary illuminating both sides of a hotly debated issue: Should the original artists get paid when someone samples their work? Are current copyright laws out of step with our mashed-up, high-tech culture?" "...an amazing documentary on the history of sampling" -Rob Sheffield, Contributing Editor, Rolling Stone. "...so vibrant in presentation and in its use of audio/visual mash-ups proving their points that it's not only one of the most enjoyable documentaries you've seen in a while, it's one of the only ones you can dance to." - Hartford Courant. "Benjamin Franzen and Kembrew McLeod's exceptionally smart and energetic documentary lays out the complexities of sampling--artistic and political, legal and philosophical."

Herbert von Karajan said once that when you hear Mahler's Fifth, “you forget that time has passed. A great performance of the Fifth is a transforming experience.” The English lecturer and musician Jeremy Barham introduces the work at the piano and reflects on the secrets of the composition.

    Year: 2012

    Runtime: 30 min

The Symphony No. 5 in E minor by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was composed between May and August

1888. It was first performed, under Tchaikovsky's own baton, in St Petersburg on November 6, 1888.

While composing the symphony, Tchaikovsky constantly doubted his powers of composition.

However, after a performance of the symphony in Hamburg the composer wrote: "I no longer have a

bad opinion of the symphony, and like it once more!" Constantin Floros, one of Germanys most

renowned musicologists and Tchaikovsky experts, works out the interesting connection between

In the summer of 1970, some of the era’s biggest rock stars took to the rails for Festival Express, a multi-artist, multi-city concert tour that captured the spirit and imagination of a generation. What made it unique was that it was portable; for five days, the bands and performers lived, slept, rehearsed and let loose aboard a customized train that traveled from Toronto, to Winnipeg, to Calgary, with each stop culminating in a mega-concert. The entire experience was filmed both off-stage and on, but the extensive footage and sound tapes of the events remained locked away for decades, only recently having been rediscovered and restored. The film Festival Express is a momentous achievement in rock film archaeology which combines the long-lost material with contemporary interviews that add important context to the event nearly 35 years after originally being filmed.

In this presentation composers Milton Babbit, Richard Danielpour, Lowell Liebermann, George Perle, Ned Rorem, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich join Istomin to discuss and argue about the strong feelings and controversies surrounding modern contemporary music and the challenges that programming their music presents. This is the story of how the music business was transformed in the 1980s by like-minded musicians who decided to self-publish their work. They formed a "network" before the internet or email made it commonplace.

Today it is common practice for musicians to self-publish their work. But this is a recent development in music history, which began in the 1980s. It came in response to a music business with a narrow spectrum of music that was being released and promoted.

Before the internet or email, there was a network of "Underground" musicians and bands who networked with each other by producing recordings at home, exchanging them with each other, and communicating with hand-written letters. They created their own "record labels." They produced independent magazines and the first generation of radio shows devoted to independently released music.

In the 1980s the music industry was also transformed by numerous technological developments: the first affordable recording equipment, the first affordable synthesizers and affordable photo-copying. For the first time, musicians were able to record and distribute their music without a "major" record company.

The network was supported by small, independent record stores (which have all but disappeared) where musicians could place their work for sale, as well as discover other like-minded artists and magazines. This created a sense of community in which artists were working locally with stores in their home towns. To a great extent, these stores helped build the network .

    Year: 2011

    Runtime: 1 hr 8 min

Haydn's Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross was recognised throughout Europe as a masterpiece when it was premiered in the church of Santa Cueva, Cadiz in 1796. Haydn himself thought it was the best piece of music he ever wrote, and it established his fame in Europe and beyond. Paradoxically, the first version for orchestra, the most famous in Haydn's era, is the least known today.
Now, for the first time, the work has been recorded in its original setting using the original orchestral score, which has only been available in a modern edition since 1962. This historic television recording is performed by Le Concert des Nations under the baton of Jordi Savall, one of Europe’s leading exponents of period music. The performance is enhanced by specially shot footage from the Holy Week processions which take place in Cadiz every Easter.
Shot in HD, in the setting where the work was commissioned, the city of Cádiz, the performance is available in two versions - music only, or also containing stunning images from the Holy Week processions in Cadiz & readings of the Seven Last Words by a priest.

  • Play Your Own Thing - A Story of Jazz in Europe

    Various Artists

    Year: 2007

    Runtime: 1 hr 29 min

The music documentary Play Your Own Thing provides a comprehensive history of European Jazz. It explores the origins of the US-influenced Jazz clubs after the Second World War, the first steps independent of American jazz and the various changes of direction that have repeatedly occurred in European jazz in the search for that "own voice" that European jazz musicians have helped to form. Featuring the great masters of European jazz such as Chris Barber, Jan Garbarek, Juliette Gréco, Stefano Bollani and Till Brönner, to name but a few, the film provides a wealth of styles in Jazz. For his third documentary on jazz, film-maker Julian Benedikt travelled to a wide variety of European countries in search of an all-embracing documentation of European jazz music. His story telling is neither too sophisticated nor does he simply reproduce the known clichés, rather the movie engages its audience with very personal impressions of European jazz, past and present. Accompanied by rarely seen archival footage featuring such influencing American jazz legends as Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, this unique document offers a collection of sparkling musical gems from both sides of the Atlantic. A great music film!

This production of La Bohème remains true to the period and the libretto of the original score. • Scene Not Heard: Woman in Philadelphia Hip Hop

    Various Artists

    Year: 2005

    Runtime: 45 min

Philadelphia is often referred to as the mecca for American soul music, however its contributions to hip-hop have been overlooked despite its mass proliferation of artists, many of whom have made landmark contributions as emcees, graffiti artists, dancers, and most notable as deejays. Native talents such as Will Smith, The Roots, and Eve have become international pop stars and made great strides domestically and internationally, but somehow "the Illadelph" still doesn't get the kind of props of a city like Los Angeles or even Atlanta.

Despite all of this, the City of Brotherly Love has continued to churn out some of the most innovative hip-hop artists of the current generation. Perhaps one of the most unique aspects to the scene is the abundance of powerful female voices that it has produced as artists, promoters and writers. In this debut featurette, director and producer Maori Karmael Holmes seeks to tell the story of these women-the legends, the famed, and the ingénues-as they struggle to succeed in a male-dominated industry in a city that has been left behind in the national consciousness.

SCENE NOT HEARD features interviews with some of the originators of hip-hop such as Lady B, Schoolly D, Monie Love and Rennie Harris, with vanguards chiming in including Bahamadia and Ursula Rucker, and presents current talents such as the Jazzyfatnastees, Ms. Jade, and Lady Alma, and emerging talents such as Versus, Keen of Subliminal Orphans and Michele Byrd-McPhee of Montäzh, as well as scholars, critics and local promoters.

  • Sting Jamaica 2003: The Greatest One-Night Reggae Show on Earth

    Various Artists

    Year: 2003

    Runtime: 2 hr 58 min

Since the first event back in 1984 Jamaica’s Magnum Sting Festival has truly established itself and lived up to its billing as ‘The Greatest One-Night Reggae Show on Earth’. Held each Boxing Day in Portmore, St. Catherine, Sting has become renowned as being the premier showcase for the best reggae acts which Jamaica has to offer.

Featuring primarily dancehall acts, the performers invariably rise to the occasion and it has been the scene of many memorable performances over the years. With its mix of both established and up-and-coming acts, Sting has been instrumental in launching many local and international careers – including those of Shabba Ranks, Beenie Man and Tiger.

The 2003 Sting Festival proved no exception, attracting as it did a host of stellar names both old and new. They included such established international reggae stars as the witty toaster Beenie Man and dancehall crooner and Jamaican heartthrob Sanchez.

Amongst the new acts featured on this double film Set are two of the most exciting reggae talents to emerge in recent years, the boisterous DJ Elephant Man and dancehall sensation Vybz Kartel.

Sting has often courted controversy, as it did in this year, when the concert was brought to a dramatic and premature end after an on-stage brawl between Ninjaman and Vybz Kartel, reactions to which are documented in the bonus footage.

  • Straight Out of Puerto Rico: Reggaeton's Rough Road to Glory

    Various Artists

    Year: 2008

    Runtime: 1 hr 10 min

The Spanish-language musical form known as reggaeton took shape in Puerto Rico during the late 1990s. In lieu of emerging as its own unique and inimitable genre, it actually comprised a mélange of several pre-established genres - specifically, rap, hip hop, reggae and Caribbean music. Per its title, the documentary Straight Outta Puerto Rico: Reggaeton's Rough Road to Glory discusses the evolution of reggaeton from an indigenous Puerto Rican style (born and bred in the poverty-strewn barrios of San Juan) to a transcontinental phenomenon. It also details reggaeton's ultimate status as a government-discouraged form of grassroots personal expression with incendiary political content that prompted widespread censorship, political crackdowns, and suppression. The documentary contains interviews and performances featuring reggaeton superstars such as The Luny Tunes, DJ Nelson, Mexicano 777 and many others.

The two day session was an opportunity for many of these musicians to play outside of their normal genre.
