Avenged Sevenfold are a Huntington Beach, CA phenomenon. They apply soaring, pop-punk harmonies to raging power metal licks with chugging hardcore breakdowns. At the start of their career in 1999, it seemed fans of Bad Religion and Iron Maiden finally had something to agree on, but these metalcore stalwarts-turned-mainstream-rock-stars upped the ante on their signature sound, combining a more eclectic range of influences in the hard rock arena, and flipping the ratio of guttural growls to clean singing to include more of the latter and less of the former. In 2005, this new approach saw the release and success of City of Evil -- the band's major label debut, and platinum-selling record. Runtime: 1 hr 10 minOriginally released in May of 2003, Lamb of God's As The Palaces Burn is considered to by many to be one the most influential, modern day metal records of our time. The album is as uncompromising lyrically as it is musically. As The Palaces Burn takes an unflinching look at the events and attitudes that resulted from the 9/11 terrorist attacks on American soil. Songs like "Blood Junkie" are unequivocal in their condemnation of George W. Bush and his administration's jingoist stance. "Retribution or vengeance in matters not, as long as the pig stays on top of the ladder of bone his father has built," Randy Blythe howls for all to hear. It's courageous and blunt, a statement for the time, and one that the band felt compelled to make. "We all lived through that time and we had the vehicle to express those opinions," says drummer Chris Adler. "I think it would have been irresponsible to not speak our minds."
Josh Wilbur (who has worked with Lamb of God as both an engineer and producer since 2006) was careful to conserve the album's lightning-in-a-bottle energy. "A lot of people, including myself, love the original," Wilbur says. "The whole point was just to do a more 'hi-fi' version of an already great record and not to damage the killer vibe that Devin Townsend and the band had captured...Real musicians sweating it out in a studio in Virginia over a decade ago."

The interviews with band members and rock journalists in the 50 minute program touch on Maiden's early career, then delve into the creation of songs that have become hard-rock classics: the title song came about from a nightmare that bassist-songwriter Steve Harris couldn't shake, "The Prisoner" was inspired by the Patrick McGoohan television series, and the hit "Run to the Hills" made the sort of political statement (about white men's savage treatment of native peoples) that then-Capitol Records exec Don Zimmermann notes most American fans couldn't have cared less about while head-banging.

All That Remains
Runtime: 53 minIt may have taken a few years for Boston act All That Remains to make an impact on the metalcore scene, but with the release of their third full-length effort The Fall Of Ideals in 2006, All That Remains not only finally found the right balance of melody and aggression, but they also found a whole new audience, with the album easily outselling their previous efforts.
After a brief introduction and some pre-show footage of various fans screaming the bands name, All That Remains quite literally destroy with Become The Catalyst, The Air That I Breathe, Not Alone, It Dwells In Me, Six, This Calling, The Weak Willed and Indictment, all of which are lifted from The Fall Of Ideals.
The remaining four tracks This Darkened Heart, For Salvation, Tattered On My Sleeve and Focus Shall Not Fail are lifted from 2004s This Darkened Heart and seamlessly blend in with the groups more recent material without clashing too much.
All That Remains performance is near flawless, while the editing together of the multiple camera angles (Filmed by the renown High Roller Studios) retains the energy and excitement of the performance and the crowd participation perfectly. Audio wise, mixer Jason Suecof has managed to keep a raw edge to the bands sound, which gives All That Remains Live a very real live feel.
All up, All That Remains Live is a rock solid package that shows exactly why All That Remains are considered one of the better metalcore acts doing the circuit today. Highly recommended.

Runtime: 1 hr 58 minCapturing live sets from their “Carnival of Madness” and “Anything and Everything” tours, Somewhere in the Stratosphere finds Shinedown showing fans a different side of themselves. While the two live shows on this two-disc set share many of the same songs, the band treats their fans to a pair of very different performances. On the first disc, the band delivers a fairly straight-ahead performance, crushing the audience with the driving rock they’ve made a name for themselves with over the last decade. The real treat, however, comes on disc two. Recorded during the Kansas City stop of their “Anything and Everything” tour, the Florida post-grungers peel away the layers of amps, distortion, and rock & roll bombast, instead delivering an acoustic set that shows fans a more stripped-down version of the band. Though the arrangements don’t differ that drastically, the acoustic version really allows singer Brent Smith’s vocals to shine as they soar over top of the mix without having to fight with the rest of the band’s supercharged sound for supremacy. By pairing a traditional live set with something that’s more of a departure, Shinedown have created a compilation that gives fans a lot to sink their teeth into, making Somewhere in the Stratosphere an easy recommendation for anyone who loves the band and is looking to see them try to expand their sound in new directions.

Bring Me The Horizon
Runtime: 40 minFronted by a tattooed clothing designer and influenced by death metal, grindcore, and emo, Bring Me the Horizon aren't the average deathcore band. The group was formed in 2004 from the ashes of several Sheffield-based outfits, with the 2003 Disney film Pirates of the Caribbean serving as the inspiration for the band's name. Singer Oliver Sykes, guitarists Lee Malia and Curtis Ward, bassist Matt Kean, and drummer Matt Nicholls initially established their own label, Thirty Days of Night, to release their debut EP, 2005's This Is What the Edge of Your Seat Was Made For. Upon signing to the higher-profile label Visible Noise (whose roster also included Bullet for My Valentine and Lostprophets), they reissued the EP to a wider audience. Bring Me the Horizon's full-length debut, Count Your Blessings, appeared in October 2006, with an American release following one year later courtesy of Epitaph Records.
