    Rainbow

    Year: 1976

    Runtime: 1 hr 53 min

Rainbow was formed by Ritchie Blackmore in 1975 after he left Deep Purple at the height of their fame. They were instantly successful and released a string of hit albums, with an ever changing line-up, between 1975 and 1983 when Blackmore broke up the group to join the reformed Deep Purple. This concert from their European tour in 1977 features the line-up responsible for the Long Live RocknRoll album released later that year, including vocalist Ronnie James Dio and drummer Cozy Powell. Blackmore had to be smuggled out of Austria after a trouble with the police at a gig two nights earlier and was very late arriving in Munich, all of which seemed to inspire both the band and the audience to create a truly remarkable gig.

    Chicago

    Year: 2002

    Runtime: 54 min

One of the most loved bands in rock history, as well as one of the most commercially successful-with 50 hit songs in the U.S. alone, 18 gold records, a Grammy, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Chicago have maintained the unflagging devotion of millions of devoted fans throughout their 37-year career. It began with the goal of incorporating the diverse musical range of their hometown Chicago, and incorporating the big-band aesthetic that included horns which had been virtually left behind in the world of rock and roll, Chicago went on to create a sound that remains unparalleled in rock music. Incorporating rock as only one genre among the many that they drew from, the band courageously rejected the trappings of celebrity in order for the music to stand on its own. This program documents a live show that was broadcast on PBS in June of 2003 where they play many of their hits from throughout their long career, including "25 or Six to Four," "You're the Inspiration," "Saturday in the Park," and "Beginnings," among many others.

  • Live in Boston (Part 1)

    Fleetwood Mac

    Year: 2004

    Runtime: 50 min

Part 1: As one of the most popular and enduring acts for more than thirty-five years, Fleetwood Mac has seen it all. Anchored by the tight rhythm section of Mick Fleetwood on drums and John McVie on bass, Fleetwood Mac began as a hard-hitting British blues-rock act in 1967, featuring "Black Magic Woman" author, Peter Green. Over the next decade Fleetwood and McVie led the band through numerous personnel changes, including the exit of guitarists and Green and Jeremy Spencer, as psychedelic-era casualties. The band's personnel shuffling resulted in a late 1974 move to California. While auditioning engineers for their new album, Fleetwood and McVie were impressed by soft-rock songwriting duo: Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Shortly thereafter the rhythm section stalwarts invited the duo to join Fleetwood Mac, changing the course of the band's musical direction.

    Ra Ra Riot

    Year: 2010

    Runtime: 26 min

Ra Ra Riot. Such an appropriate name. The cheerleader-esque "Ra ra" chant evokes images of high school, all of which can be found in this youthful band. You've got your photogenic prom queens on violin and cello. Your shaggy-haired Drama Club Stud on vocals. Your lovable athletic jock on drums. Your wacky class clowns on guitar and bass. And there's the "Riot" part, which comes close to describing this six-piece's blend of controlled chaos. The songs combine distorted guitar, fat bass, keyboards, orchestrated strings, and vocals. Mix the Arcade Fire with Devo and some coverpage-worthy good looks, and you wouldn't be too far from Ra Ra Riot's enjoyable racket.

Lynyrd Skynyrd are the ultimate Southern Rock band. Their signature three guitar attack coupled to superb songwriting and massive on stage charisma has rightfully earned them a reputation as one of the greatest live bands of all time. The original band infamously had their career cut short by a disastrous plane crash in 1977 which took the lives of three members plus two of their road crew and seriously injured several others. In 1987 the surviving members reformed the band with Johnny Van Zant taking the place of his brother Ronnie. This concert from 1996 captures the band on top form at Rockpalasts Loreley Festival on 23 June 1996.

  • Let The Music Play

    The Doobie Brothers

    Year: 2012

    Runtime: 1 hr 40 min

"Let The Music Play" is the authorized story of The Doobie Brothers from their beginnings as a biker band in California in 1970, through their breakthrough with "Listen To The Music" in 1972, sustained success and line-up changes in the mid-seventies and their change of musical direction and further success following the arrival of Michael McDonald in 1976. Worn out by non-stop touring and internal disagreements the band broke up after a "farewell" concert in 1982. There were sporadic reunions in the eighties before the band reformed permanently in the early nineties and have continued touring and recording ever since. This new film features contributions from all the surviving key band members, their manager Bruce Cohn and long term producer Ted Templeman to tell the full story of the band's highs and lows through four decades of musical evolution.
