Supported by a cast of superlative actor-singers in opulent scenery, Sir George Solti agreed to conduct the opera at short notice after Karajan’s unexpected death in 1989. The production had been expected to be a highlight in Karajan’s series of Verdi operas at Salzburg. Karajan’s celebrated ability to unite a cultivated sound with dramatic effects was known to create extraordinary and highly acclaimed opera events. For Un ballo in maschera Karajan planned something unusual: He would not set the opera in colonial Massachusetts, as the censors had forced Verdi to do when he was composing the work, but in Stockholm in the 1790s at the court of King Gustav III of Sweden, as Verdi had originally conceived his work. Together with the film director John Schlesinger and his stage team, Karajan developed a concept that promised theatrical splendour equal to the musical excellence that the conductor and the handpicked cast of singers would surely provide in collaboration with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. But this was not to be: stage rehearsals had already begun for the opening performance of the 1989 festival when Karajan died on 16 July. Therefore it was extraordinarily lucky that a conductor of Sir Georg Solti’s standing, was prepared to undertake the task just a week before the premiere, and with the whole world watching. He and the staging by Hollywood film director John Schlesinger was acclaimed by audience and press alike.

    This very Italian conductor, born in Milan in 1933, who was for fifteen years the director of the Scala trained in Vienna with Hans Swarowsky is extremely familiar with the culture of Central Europe, of its literature and its fine arts. It is with the Second symphony by Mahler that he chooses to make his debut, at thirty-two, with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Vienna. The Youth Orchestra he founded in 1986 bears the name of Gustav Mahler. Since then, Abbado continues to exhale the complex beauty of the Viennese composers’ symphonies in all the concert halls of the world.

    That evening in April 2004 at the Saint Cecilia Academy in Rome, it is with the very same Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra that he conducts Mahler’s last symphony that went unfinished, the Ninth Symphony. Composed in 1909, it was premiered in 912 by Bruno Walter, who was a close friend of the composer and whom Abbado heard conduct in Vienna… In this absolute masterpiece of a symphonic work, Claudio Abbado, one with his orchestra, delivers a very moving interpretation which rises like the most beautiful prayer.

    On 9 October in 1989, 70,000 people staged a peaceful demonstration calling for more freedom and democracy in the GDR. Thanks to the claim "Peaceful Revolution", initiated by Kurt Masur as one of six prominent citizens of Leipzig, everything proceeded peacefully. That evening, the Gewandhausorchester played under his baton Brahms' Second Symphony at the St Nicolas Church. The following regular "Monday Demonstrations", which came to be described as the "Peaceful Revolution", became a major milestone on the way to open the Berlin Wall one month later on November the 9th in 1989 and paved the foundations for the reunification of the two German states. Exactly 20 years later, the Gewandhausorchester and Kurt Masur commemorate the beginning of the German reunification by presenting the same symphony at the same location.

    An original portrait sketched under the sign of the German poet Holderin - the actor Bruno Ganz recites on of his poems at the beginning of the film. Claudio Abbado is sparing in his words although he is generous in his emotions. That is what makes this documentary special: Abbado talks about his illness (he was operated on for cancer in 2001) and the revolution this illness caused in his life, he shares a little of his private life and talks about his work as a conductor.

    Johann Sebastian Bach composed the St. John Passion in Cöthen during the winter of 1722/23. The text is drawn from chapters 18 and 19 of the Gospel according to St. John, and includes some excerpts from St. Mathew and additional text from a Passion poem by the Hamburg town councillor Barthold Heinrich Brockes. The composer led the first performance at the Good Friday services on 7 April 1724 at St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig, where he had since become municipal music director and cantor of the Thomasschule. This Passion is heard less often today than the St. Matthew Passion, perhaps because the St. John Passion is in some ways more raw and evokes the anguish of the Passion more painfully than the St. Matthew work. A musician’s musician, an occasional firebrand and a constant paradox – Nikolaus Harnoncourt (born in 1929) is one of the most profound and intriguing conductors of our time. Considered one of the world’s leading specialists of Baroque music, he has long since turned his attention to Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and even to Jacques Offenbach and Johann Strauss. He spent many years as a cellist with the Wiener Symphoniker before founding the "Concentus Musicus Wien" with his wife Alice in 1953. It soon became one of the world’s most respected ensembles specializing in the performance of early music on original instruments. In the 1970s, Harnoncourt joined forces with Jean-Pierre Ponnelle to stage a series of Monteverdi operas at the Zurich Opera House. This universally acclaimed cycle contributed to a renaissance of Monteverdi’s music and set standards for early Baroque performance practice. He later began to turn his attention more and more to the music of Mozart, whom he considers "the most romantic of all composers". Harnoncourt did not make his official debut at the Salzburg Festival until 1992. He has been conducting there regularly since then and is a sought-after guest conductor of such reputable ensembles as the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

    Actor and singer Patrick Bruel was one of France's biggest stars during the '90s, first making his name as a teen idol and leading a return to traditional French chanson in the new millennium. Bruel was born Patrick Benguigui in Tlemcen, Algeria, on May 14, 1959. His father abandoned the family when Patrick was only a year old, and in 1962, after Algeria won its independence, his mother moved to France, settling in the Paris suburb of Argenteuil. A fine soccer player in his youth, Patrick first settled on the idea of being a singer after seeing Michel Sardou perform in 1975. As luck would have it, acting would bring him his first success; first-time director Alexandre Arcady ran an ad seeking a young man with a French-Algerian (or "pied-noir" in French slang) accent for his film Le Coup de Sirocco. Benguigui (as he was still called) responded and won the part. The following year, he spent some time in New York City, where he met Gérard Presgurvic, later to become his primary songwriter.

    Returning to Paris, Bruel appeared in several films, television shows, and plays, and cut his first single, "Vide," in 1982. It failed to attract much attention, but his next effort, "Marre Cette Nana-là" ("Enough of That Chick"), was a substantial hit in 1984. A follow-up, "Comment Ça Va Pour Vous" ("How's It Going for You"), also found success in 1985. Bruel released his debut album, De Face, in 1986, but it failed to live up to expectations and didn't sell particularly well. After several more film appearances and a live recording made at the Olympia, Bruel recorded a second studio album, Alors Regarde, in 1989. Paced by the smash hit "Casser la Voix" ("To Break the Voice"), the album made Bruel a superstar in Europe and Canada, and would eventually go on to sell over three million copies. Bruel embarked on a sold-out tour; throngs of screaming teenage girls packed his concerts, leading the French media to dub the phenomenon "Bruelmania" (though some critics harbored reservations about his musical talent). A second live album, Si Ce Soir, was culled from the tour.

    The film opens with a ride across the Mexican metropolis, home to eighteen million, in one of the famous green Beetle taxis. This is where the tenor Rolando Villazón was born. With a gaze that is part Mr. Bean and part Latin lover, he has sung his way into the hearts of opera fans around the world. Before Villazón’s thoughts ever turned to the stage, he attended school like every other boy. Twenty years later, he is now returning to his alma mater, the German Alexander von Humboldt school in Mexico City. “Somehow it’s strange,” says Villazón, standing among the small boys in the school courtyard. “I was one of them, and now I realize that the child I was back then still exists today. And now I know that this child must always have been within me, because he is who I am now.”
    It is with a nearly childish delight that he cavorts about the stage today - for instance, in the legendary La Traviata production at the 2005 Salzburg Festival. He and Anna Netrebko rehearsed and played probably the most passionate and tragic couple in opera literature.
    The filmmakers Daniel Finkernagel and Alexander Lück accompanied the tenor for two years, making a documentary that does not follow a strict timeline, but moves between present and past when it suits the film’s thematic focus.
    The visit to Mexico arouses many memories, and Villazón talks about special moments in his past for the first time with the camera crew: his first dressing room, the small stage at the Theatro de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, where Rolando sang in his first competition, his first bout of nervousness, the seminary where Rolando worked as a history teacher for five years and even considered becoming a priest himself.
    In addition to revisiting the past, the film shows everyday moments in the life of a tenor who is in demand around the world: acclaimed performances at the Liceo Barcelona, intense rehearsals with Anna Netrebko for the Salzburg Traviata, and his breakthrough performance in 2005 as a marvelously suffering Don Jose at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin.
    A Mexican Dream tells the story of Rolando Villazón’s life, from his early years to his great successes. It is less a chronological biography than an exploration of the thoughts and feelings of one of the great singers of our time.
