  • Courage and Patience and Grit

    Great Big Sea

    Year: 2008

    Runtime: 1 hr

Since they emerged in the early 90s, Newfoundland's own Great Big Sea have gradually consolidated a reputation as one of the greatest neo-Celt bands, from anywhere in the Six Nations or, as in this case, beyond. Drawing upon their homeland's strong Irish and Scottish ancestry and centuries-old seafaring heritage, they have fashioned a roistering, danceable sound and a live presence not unlike a bar-band but operating on a massive scale. But for all their good-time, party-hearty extroversion, they also demonstrate a rare affinity for love songs and more introspective types of material. Recorded in spectacular sound before adoring audiences, this "kitchen party," as one band member described it, is at once intimate and grand, folkloric and modern, acoustic and electric. Traditional instruments like fiddle, tin whistle, accordion are fused seamlessly with electric guitars and trap drums, plus tight and charismatic lead and harmony vocals, creating a spiraling energy that takes the crowd by storm and hurtles from living room speakers like a conquering wave.

    Beirut

    Year: 2009

    Runtime: 37 min

Summer 2011 saw the release of The Rip Tide on Condons own Pompeii Label, Beiruts first proper LP since The Flying Club Cup. Written in isolation during a snowy upstate winter, the album marked a stark change in emotional direction, that is to say, inward. Reflecting less on the travels and travails borne of the wanderlust struck musician, instead, The Rip Tide has crystallized the sounds of Beiruts past into a cohesive and remarkable whole, all while maintaining the unmistakable aesthetic that has brought them around the world, and home again.

  • A Backyard Session with Brett Dennen

    Brett Dennen

    Year: 2013

    Runtime: 13 min

Smoke And Mirrors is an odd title to sketch across the cover of Brett Dennen's 5th album. The tall, laid-back Californian has always brewed a batch of heartfelt, honest songwriting; a quality that seems more at the forefront than ever before. Born in the mountains around his cabin home, the three songs here bring with them a certain rustic ease. I suppose that's just what happens when your writing sessions are bookended by long hikes and cool dips in the lake. But the most obvious quality is just how personal Brett gets here, belting out anthems about staying true to ones' self, reminding us of the danger of overthinking things, or just declaring an anonymous love for someone. No Smoke, No Mirrors...just simple, acoustic honesty in our latest session.

«Raï» is a folk music form in Algeria. The word means opinion or view, a pointed message to the world. Khaled experienced the danger of spreading that message when the Islamists took over the country in 1986. He was forced to flee at the age of just 26. Khaled continued to develop his music in France. He became a superstar and an important symbol in his homeland, although he was forbidden to perform there. Khaled wants to entertain and to be popular. He says what he thinks and he plays raï the way he wants to, electronically, but also with traditional instruments, western and yet still Maghrebian, in different languages, but most
of all with a message that is loud and clear.
