Like many other British bands of the '90s, Supergrass' musical roots lie in the infectiously catchy punk-pop of the Buzzcocks and the Jam, as well as the post-punk pop of Madness and the traditional Brit-pop of the Kinks and Small Faces. the band brings in elements of decidedly unhip groups like Elton John, as well as classic rockers like David Bowie, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones. With an exuberant, youthful enthusiasm, Supergrass tied all of their influences together in new surprising ways, where a Buzzcocks riff could slam into three-part harmonies out of "Crocodile Rock," or have a galloping music hall rhythm stutter like the best moments of the Who.

    Oceansize

    Oceansize were one of numerous British bands crafting epic, moody soundscapes in the post-Radiohead era. Their influences ran the gamut from space rock old (Pink Floyd) and new (Mogwai, the Verve) to alternative metal (Jane's Addiction, Tool), shoegaze (My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver), and even the avant-garde (Can, Tortoise). Formed in Manchester, England, the band featured vocalist/guitarist Mike Vennart, guitarists Gambler and Steve Durose, bassist Jon Ellis, and drummer Mark Herrin. Quickly building a local following, they issued several independent releases -- the "Saturday Morning Breakfast Show" single, the 2000 EP Amputee, the 2001 EP A Very Still Movement -- that got them named Manchester's best unsigned band. The following year, they toured with the Cooper Temple Clause and made a well-received appearance at Texas' South by Southwest festival.

    Starsailor

    Some would say that Starsailor are Chorley's biggest contribution to modern culture since the opening of the nearby Charnock Richard M6 motorway services in the 1960s. Like the aforementioned favourite resting point for Blackpool day-trippers Love Is Here (Live), will become a solid, long-stay favourite for fans. Recorded in November 2001, one month after the release of their debut album and while they were still being lauded as "the next big thing", the main feature is a live run through of the album. New composition "Some of Us" and the B-side "From a Whisper to a Scream" are also performed, along with versions of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and Elton John's "Rocket Man". The concert footage and the audio (Dolby 5.1) are of a high quality, and breakthrough tracks "Poor Misguided Fool" and "Alcoholic" sound stunning. The show is hampered, though, by the limited material the guys can draw upon, and Walsh's repetitive melancholic delivery of existing songs. What does become apparent is that after a couple more albums and a little more musical experimentation Starsailor are on course to be live giants.

    Puddle Of Mudd rose from the ashes of alternative metal with the release of their debut album Come Clean in 2001. Although often grouped with the likes of Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park, Puddle Of Mudds sound is a lot closer to the likes of Nirvana and more traditional hard rock.     Before New Zealander Russell Crowe became an Oscar-winning Hollywood heavyweight, he was a guy in a band writing songs about his parents, his politics and his sweetheart (and now wife), Danielle. Today, Crowe continues his first passion (he wrote his first song at age 6) with the band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, or TOFOG - the name for a sound effect that Crowe heard while working on the set of the 1995 film, Virtuosity. Together since the late '80's Crowe and his band mates give a performance that features the bravado-stripped, engaging and garrulous Crowe along with the rocking, carefree, and guitar infused Grunts.

    Crowe's baritone is deep as he sings songs written for his wife "Inside Your Eyes," along with the song "Swallow My Gift" a tune he wrote in response to critics who over-scrutinize his music. The band features other songs off their recent album Other Ways of Speaking including "Never Be Alone Again," "What's Her Name?" and "Charlie's Song." Crowe's cover of "Ring of Fire" reveals the rough-edge rock that the band builds from while also hinting at their blues, folk and pop influences.

    The highlight of the evening comes in the form of an onstage duet with country-pop icon Kris Kristofferson. TOFOG and Crowe cover the hits "Me and Bobby McGee," originally sung by Janis Joplin, and Kris' "Sunday Morning Coming Down," recorded by Johnny Cash. On his own, Kristofferson performs hits that highlight his philosophical lyricism and poignant arrangements including "The Circle," "A Moment of Forever" and "Help Me Make It Through The Night."
