  • Straight Outta Puerto Rico: Reggaeton's Rough Road to Glory

    Various Artists

    Year: 2008

    Runtime: 1 hr 10 min

The Spanish-language musical form known as reggaeton took shape in Puerto Rico during the late 1990s. In lieu of emerging as its own unique and inimitable genre, it actually comprised a mélange of several pre-established genres - specifically, rap, hip hop, reggae and Caribbean music. Per its title, the documentary Straight Outta Puerto Rico: Reggaeton's Rough Road to Glory discusses the evolution of reggaeton from an indigenous Puerto Rican style (born and bred in the poverty-strewn barrios of San Juan) to a transcontinental phenomenon. It also details reggaeton's ultimate status as a government-discouraged form of grassroots personal expression with incendiary political content that prompted widespread censorship, political crackdowns, and suppression. The documentary contains interviews and performances featuring reggaeton superstars such as The Luny Tunes, DJ Nelson, Mexicano 777 and many others.

In this remarkable video, "The New Dance Group Gala Concert: Retrospective 1930s-1970s" viewers will enjoy viewing dances of some of the most influential Modern Dance pioneers including: Mary Anthony, Ronne Aul, Talley Beatty, Valerie Bettis, Irving Burton, Jane Dudley, Jean Erdman, Eve Gentry, Joseph Gifford, Hadassah, Sophie Maslow, Donald McKayle, Daniel Nagrin, Pearl Primus, Anna Sokolow, Joyce Trisler, Charles Weidman. The American Dance Guild created a one-time concert, which is a unique historic retrospective of the Modern Dance choreographers of THE NEW DANCE GROUP from the 1930's to the 1970's. This concert of 18 recreated dances and excerpts celebrates and honors the achievements of the New Dance Group in its heyday. At the time, the choreographers of the dances featured in this video were a dramatic voice for social change. These choreographers came from the 1930's tradition of idealistic artistic innovators who aimed to make dance a viable statement about the injustices of the world. The GALA Concert presents the original choreographers, or their artistic heirs, together with excellent professional dancers in a program of influential and compelling works. The GALA Concert was produced by the American Dance Guild in June 1993, and includes mini-interviews with the choreographers. The video includes such legendary dances as: "the solo Masterpiece of the decade", THE DESPERATE HEART (1943) by Valerie Bettis, and the darkly dramatic LYNCHTOWN (1936) by Charles Weidman. There are important dances that highlight the American black experience, such as Pearl Primus's THE NEGRO SPEAKS OF RIVERS (1944), and Donald McKayle's portrayal of the experience of chain gangs in RAINBOW ROUND MY SHOULDER (1959). Also featured are Modern Dances true mavericks, including Anna Sokolow's LYRIC SUITE (1954), Daniel Nagrin's STRANGE HERO (1948) and Sophie Maslow's FOLKSAY (1942).

    M

    Year: 2006

    Runtime: 1 hr 15 min

Chedid created ‑M- as means of overcoming his shyness on stage and also as a way of distancing his work from that of his father and grandmother. The pseudonym comes from Chedid's first initial but also refers to the similar sounding French word aime, meaning love. The character ‑M- is a superhero, noted for having a playful nature, and recognized for his flamboyant costumes (primarily monochrome suits with slim trousers and long jackets with upward pointed collars) and hair styled into the shape of an M.
-M- gained international exposure through his recording of the song "Belleville Rendez-vous" for the soundtrack of the 2003 Sylvain Chomet animated film The Triplets of Belleville in both French and English. The song, with lyrics by Chomet and music by Benoit Charest, was nominated for a 2003 Academy Award. The music video for "Belleville Rendez-vous" uses both a live-action depiction of ‑M- and an animated depiction incorporated into footage from the film.
