  • Live 2003

    Coldplay

    Year: 2003

    Runtime: 1 hr 32 min

Riding high on the phenomenal success of A Rush of Blood to the Head, Coldplay is in peak form on Coldplay Live 2003. This concert was filmed (on Super-16mm film) and recorded in Sydney's Horden Pavilion on July 21 and 22, 2003, during an exhaustive year-long world tour, and the medium-sized arena provides a fitting stage for the London-based rock quartet, not so grand as to overwhelm the music, but large enough to indicate their large and loyal following, which includes enthusiastic fans of either gender. Especially when played in DTS 5.1 surround, this 90-minute concert is richer, thicker, and (of course) louder than Coldplay's studio recordings, lending a wall-of-sound expansiveness to the band's signature sound, which draws from such diverse influences as Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Verve, U2, and their own unique sonic landscape. "Politik" gets the gig off to a rousing start, and other impressive highlights include "Daylight," "Yellow," the as-yet-unreleased new song "Moses," and the popular hits "In My Place," "Clocks," and "The Scientist." And while the concert visuals are slick and professional, this film--the latter containing a truncated 70-minute version of the same performance--are best appreciated for their pristine audio quality.

    30 Odd Foot Of Grunts

    Year: 2003

    Runtime: 55 min

Before New Zealander Russell Crowe became an Oscar-winning Hollywood heavyweight, he was a guy in a band writing songs about his parents, his politics and his sweetheart (and now wife), Danielle. Today, Crowe continues his first passion (he wrote his first song at age 6) with the band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, or TOFOG - the name for a sound effect that Crowe heard while working on the set of the 1995 film, Virtuosity. Together since the late '80's Crowe and his band mates give a performance that features the bravado-stripped, engaging and garrulous Crowe along with the rocking, carefree, and guitar infused Grunts.

Crowe's baritone is deep as he sings songs written for his wife "Inside Your Eyes," along with the song "Swallow My Gift" a tune he wrote in response to critics who over-scrutinize his music. The band features other songs off their recent album Other Ways of Speaking including "Never Be Alone Again," "What's Her Name?" and "Charlie's Song." Crowe's cover of "Ring of Fire" reveals the rough-edge rock that the band builds from while also hinting at their blues, folk and pop influences.

The highlight of the evening comes in the form of an onstage duet with country-pop icon Kris Kristofferson. TOFOG and Crowe cover the hits "Me and Bobby McGee," originally sung by Janis Joplin, and Kris' "Sunday Morning Coming Down," recorded by Johnny Cash. On his own, Kristofferson performs hits that highlight his philosophical lyricism and poignant arrangements including "The Circle," "A Moment of Forever" and "Help Me Make It Through The Night."

    6ft Hick

    Year: 2010

    Runtime: 1 hr 1 min

Strip the $$$ out of rock ‘n’ roll, restore the danger and you’re left with the raw force of 6ft Hick. Armed only with strut and pure provocation, 6ft Hick level a rock ‘n’ roll sucker punch you would lean in for. Slog 6,000 kms across Europe with Australia’s mangiest Rockabilly Punks, through 15 shows in 18 days, in a world where managers, roadies and riders give way to blood, sex, and pure adrenaline. Over fifteen years 6ft Hick built a fervent underground following across Australia and Europe, one beer-soaked venue at a time, their raw sound and stage antics propelling them into the realm of urban myth. One reviewer described their show as “an indistinguishable pulverising barrage of screams, sweat, spit and blood flowing over a fierce, raw pulsing din,” while front men Ben and Geoff Corbett commanded the stage like ‘demented preachers’. Offstage, their mild-mannered alter egos maintain day jobs and live normal lives, amassing resources so they may re-awaken the beast within. Real life occurs on the road, even though the tours themselves barely break even. But in the words of guitarist Dan Baebler, “We’re not in it for the money, we’re doing this because we can’t not”. This film is a rock ‘n’ roll thrill ride that investigates what it means to care more about the journey than the destination and what it truly means to sacrifice for your art.

However, Sá came to realize that the life he was living was a dead end, and gave up selling drugs and gang life to become a community activist. Sa also had musical talent, as did a handful of like-minded friends, and together they began fusing the energy and immediacy of hip-hop with the hypnotic grooves of reggae, creating a new sound called afro-reggae in the process. Favela Rising follows Sá and his comrades as they share the story of his violent past, his vision of a better future for the favelas of Brazil, and the crucial message behind their music.

    Runtime: 1 hr 25 min

Antonello Venditti (born 8 March 1949) is an Italian singer-songwriter who became famous in the 1970s for the social themes of his songs.
Antonello Venditti was born in Rome, the son of Vincenzino Italo from Campolieto Molise, deputy-prefect in Rome.
He studied piano in his youth and made his debut in the music world in the early 1970s at the Folkstudio of Rome, together with singers like Francesco De Gregori and Giorgio Lo Cascio. In duo with the former he released in 1972 his first LP, Theorius Campus. The LP scored little success, but Venditti at least made himself noted for the strength of his vocal qualities and for his attention to social issues, evidenced by pieces like Sora Rosa which is sung in Roman dialect. Also in dialect was Roma Capoccia, a declaration of love for his city, which later became one of his most famous songs. Curiously, Venditti refused to sing it for several years, as he considered it not politically or socially "engaged" enough.

  • Live at Wembley

    Beyoncé

    Year: 2004

    Runtime: 2 hr 14 min

Beyonce's London fans go crazy when the Destiny's Child beauty, on her first solo international tour, descends to a massive stage while suspended, upside down, from a wire. After a delicate landing, the star embarks on a set of recent hits immersed in complicated arrangements, including the Arabic sound of "Baby Boy" and "Naughty Girl," the chunky, hypnotic funk of "Hip Hop Star," and Beyonce: Live at Wembley's best performance, the powerful "Work It Out," in which the diva is at her clearest, jazziest, and most soulful. Not everything works. The bottom falls out of "Gift from Virgo," "Be with You" is forgettable, and Beyonce's stage patter needs polish. But a Destiny's Child medley accompanied by only a DJ is innovative and fun, "Summertime" proves a breezy dance number, and "Crazy in Love" is bolstered by what sounds like the old Stax horns.

    Billy Joel

    Year: 2008

    Runtime: 2 hr 21 min

With Beatlemania at its height in 1965, Shea Stadium in Queens, New York was the site of the first stadium show ever by The Beatles, or any rock & roll band for that matter. The Beatles' Shea performances made an impression on a young working-class musician from Long Island named Billy Joel. When the Mets built a new stadium and said goodbye to Shea in 2008, the local native turned superstar was the logical choice to give it a proper sendoff.

The companion to the acclaimed documentary The Last Play At Shea, the premiere release of Billy Joel Live At Shea Stadium features a full concert-length program: more than two hours of hits, history, memories and guest stars including Paul McCartney, all in riveting performances worthy of the historic building where it all went down.
