    Yardbirds

    Year: 2011

    Runtime: 1 hr 3 min

If rock n roll is a laboratory for new ideas and sounds, mutated with traditional modes, then are the Yardbirds not the greatest and maddest of scientists. Still mixing the traditional with the outrageous, the new with the old. Just as the original outfit gave flight to Clapton, Beck and Page, today's Yardbirds give flight to a prodigiously talented flock in the form of Ben King, Andy Mitchell and Dave Smale.

Led Zeppelin Manager Peter Grant travelled to Scotland to see the band Power perform centred around the distinctive vocals of MAGGIE BELL.

Suitably impressed, he signed them but had a name change in mind and they were renamed STONE THE CROWS. Even though their original guitarist Leslie Harvey had been electrocuted during a sound check at The Swansea Ballroom in 1972 they had regrouped with JIMMY McCULLOCH playing guitar and were at a creative and performance peak when this concert was recorded in Germany during 1973.

  • Live 1990

    Ten Years After

    Year: 1990

    Runtime: 1 hr 2 min

An aural document of the reunion tour in support of ABOUT TIME (the band's first new studio album in 15 years), LIVE 1990 demonstrates that time had not dimmed Ten Years After's firepower as a live act. Actually, thanks to the wonders of technology--gated drums, synthesizers, effects pedals--they sound tougher than ever, closer in fact to Z.Z.Top than to their legendary UNDEAD album.

In any case, the band seems thoroughly energized, and the more familiar songs--the salacious "Good Morning, Little Schoolgirl," FM radio favorite "Love Like a Man," and their signature ""I'm Goin' Home"--are performed with every bit as much exuberance as the newer ones. Bottom line: A treat for fans.

  • John Mayall: In the Shadow of Legends

    John Mayall

    Year: 1981

    Runtime: 1 hr 30 min

The story of this vibrant night of Blues, filmed over a decade after the
worldwide rediscovery of the roots of Rock ‘N’ Roll, is the story of John Mayall, the pioneer of British Blues, and roving global ambassador fro the genre. Memphis and Chicago Blues legends joined British Blues icon John Mayall and his Bluesbreakers on stage, one special night in June 1982 at New Jersey’s Capitol Theater. The concert turned out to be a summit gathering of some of the greatest names in Blues music, when guitarists Albert King and Buddy Guy, harmonica player Junior Wells and singers Etta James and Sippie Wallace, all showed up to sit in with the band. Musical history was written that night, when John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, featuring former Bluesbreaker and one-time Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor, bassist John McVie (Bluesbreakers, Fleetwood Mac), and drummer Colin Allen (Bob Dylan, Solomon Burke), paid homage to, and played with these five immortals of the genre.

  • Live in Amsterdam

    Toto

    Year: 2002

    Runtime: 1 hr 44 min

Toto may be past its prime as a multi-platinum recording band, but Live in Amsterdam offers abundant proof that their performances are as electrifying as ever. Recorded in Amsterdam's Heineken Music Hall on February 17, 2003, near the end of Toto's 25th anniversary world tour, this dynamic concert serves as a cheerful reminder that Toto have been alive and well and recording steadily since 1978. The band's 2002 release Through the Looking Glass was an album of covers, two of which are welcomed here: "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is a prime showcase for guitarist Steve Lukather, and "Bodhisattva" is a tight, meticulous tribute to Toto's original drummer, the late Jeff Porcaro, and his classic sessions with Steely Dan. The mega-hits "Africa," "Rosanna," and "Hold the Line" are perfectly executed, and in a band full of talented singers, lead vocalist Bobby Kimball sounds better than ever. Two impressive medleys show the band in full gear as a comfortable unit of seasoned professionals, highlighted by impeccable work from keyboardist David Paich, bassist Mike Poracaro, and ace drummer Simon Phillips (who also produced and mixed this recording for this program). And while 35 minutes of Porcaro's backstage home-video might seem frivolous, it shows a band that's still having fun, as reflected in the beaming smiles of their appreciative Amsterdam audience.

    John Mayall

    Year: 1968

    Runtime: 24 min

This film combines two documentaries about John Mayall, both directed by Peter Gibson. The Turning Point captures John Mayall and the Blusebreakers at a critical point in their hugely influential career. Following from the last tour by the “Laurel Canyon” line up in May 1969, Mayall made two big decisions. Firstly he was going to relocate to the USA and secondly he was going to form a new, more acoustic based line up which would not feature drums. There are interviews with both the old line up and the new and from departed members including Peter Green, John McVie and Eric Clapton as the film follows the first UK dates with the new format Bluesbreakers. The Godfather Of British Blues was made to celebrate John Mayall’s 70th birthday in autumn 2003 and was shown on BBC TV in conjunction with their broadcast of his 70th birthday concert. It traces his career of over 40 years playing the blues. This is complimented by rare archive film from all periods of his life.
