Live at Town Hall

Eels

Year: 2006

Runtime: 01:38:57

You never know what you'll get when you attend an Eels concert. One year it's vocoders and synthesizers, the next it's gritty garage rock. Cut to 2005: Eels leader Mark Oliver Everett, aka E, releases the highly acclaimed Blinking Lights and Other Revelations double album and assembles his most ambitious version of the EELS yet: a seven piece band consisting of Everett backed by a string quartet and two multi-instrumentalists juggling lap steel, guitar, upright bass, mandolin, saw, melodica, celeste, pump organ, piano, and a trash can and suitcase drum set. Having brought this elaborate show to Boston the night before, can the Eels get to New York, play Late Night with David Letterman, and perform their concert at the legendary Town Hall, which is being filmed for a concert film -- all with grace under incredible pressure? The answer is yes, and the proof is here!
Now you can have the best seat in the house. Enjoy 28 songs from all phases of the Eels' ten year career, along with great songs by other artists as interpreted by Eels with strings, and rare backstage and behind the scenes footage of life on the road with Eels. No tickets, no parking hassles, no drunk guy blocking your view. Just the spine-tingling performance of Eels with strings, Live at Town Hall!

    Thrice

    Year: 2011

    Runtime: 19 min

Southern Californian rock outfit Thrice have a decade long reputation for unleashing enthralling bouts of electric aggression and emotion, furiously flung from the heart without much care of consequence. The band's eighth release Major/Minor is as exciting as ever; crunchy yet melodic, with Dustin Kensrue's raspy siren overlaying an unexpected, grungy foundation. Turns out these guys are full of surprises, as we recently learned on a golden, Fall afternoon at a pristine photography studio on the west side of Manhattan. With late afternoon light painting rusty tones of orange and yellow on Dustin and guitarist Teppei Teranishi, the brothers Thrice traded electricity for more acoustic means, cutting three of Major/Minor's songs down to the mighty emotional footwork the band rely upon to truly take their music places. The result is a set that's stunning in its beauty and simplicity, yet every bit as enticing as what you have come to rely on Thrice to deliver over the years.

  • Somewhere in the Stratosphere: Anything and Everything Live in Kansas (Acoustic)

    Shinedown

    Year: 2009

    Runtime: 1 hr 58 min

Capturing live sets from their “Carnival of Madness” and “Anything and Everything” tours, Somewhere in the Stratosphere finds Shinedown showing fans a different side of themselves. While the two live shows on this two-disc set share many of the same songs, the band treats their fans to a pair of very different performances. On the first disc, the band delivers a fairly straight-ahead performance, crushing the audience with the driving rock they’ve made a name for themselves with over the last decade. The real treat, however, comes on disc two. Recorded during the Kansas City stop of their “Anything and Everything” tour, the Florida post-grungers peel away the layers of amps, distortion, and rock & roll bombast, instead delivering an acoustic set that shows fans a more stripped-down version of the band. Though the arrangements don’t differ that drastically, the acoustic version really allows singer Brent Smith’s vocals to shine as they soar over top of the mix without having to fight with the rest of the band’s supercharged sound for supremacy. By pairing a traditional live set with something that’s more of a departure, Shinedown have created a compilation that gives fans a lot to sink their teeth into, making Somewhere in the Stratosphere an easy recommendation for anyone who loves the band and is looking to see them try to expand their sound in new directions.

    Thirty Seconds To Mars

    Year: 2010

    Runtime: 30 min

Formed in 1998 by frontman Jared Leto and his older brother, 30 Seconds to Mars found success in the 2000s with a mix of post-grunge, screamo, and hard rock. The band gained a modest audience with its debut album, but it was the platinum-selling sophomore effort A Beautiful Lie that officially opened the flood gates in 2005, securing the band a frequent presence on MTV while paving the way for a number of successful tours. By placing all-access passes into 12 copies of the album, the bandmates also showed a savvy appreciation for marketing, which they revisited several years later by putting fans' photographs on the cover of their third album, This Is War.

    Suzanne Vega

Suzanne Vega broke-through with her eponymous debut album in 1985 in both Europe and America. The album featured the hits Marlene On The Wall and Left Of Center. She hit even greater heights with her second album Solitude Standing, which contained the hits Luka and Toms Diner. In many ways, she opened the way for the rush of female singer-songwriters that followed in the late eighties and early nineties. She continues to have hit albums and to play to packed houses on both sides of the Atlantic.

    Oceansize

    Year: 2007

    Runtime: 48 min

Oceansize were one of numerous British bands crafting epic, moody soundscapes in the post-Radiohead era. Their influences ran the gamut from space rock old (Pink Floyd) and new (Mogwai, the Verve) to alternative metal (Jane's Addiction, Tool), shoegaze (My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver), and even the avant-garde (Can, Tortoise). Formed in Manchester, England, the band featured vocalist/guitarist Mike Vennart, guitarists Gambler and Steve Durose, bassist Jon Ellis, and drummer Mark Herrin. Quickly building a local following, they issued several independent releases -- the "Saturday Morning Breakfast Show" single, the 2000 EP Amputee, the 2001 EP A Very Still Movement -- that got them named Manchester's best unsigned band. The following year, they toured with the Cooper Temple Clause and made a well-received appearance at Texas' South by Southwest festival.

    Year: 2008

    Runtime: 1 hr 32 min

Derided by critics as pompous, melodramatic, and bombastic, the Mission, as they were known in their native U.K., nonetheless attracted a core audience of goth rock fans. The band was formed in 1986 by guitarist/singer Wayne Hussey and bassist Craig Adams, who both left the Sisters of Mercy to do so. (Hussey had also played with the Walkie Talkies and Dead or Alive.) The two soon recruited Artery guitarist Simon Hinkler and former Red Lorry Yellow Lorry drummer Mick Brown, who solidified the line up.

    Year: 2012

    Runtime: 14 min

One wouldn't expect to find a cabin on Wall Street, but lo and behold, that's exactly where we were able to catch up with the English duo, Alberta Cross in our latest session. It's a freaky sort of space, a place where bare, industrial stairways suddenly lead to a surprising, rooftop abode that really hammers home a serene, upstate vibe. Right there on Wall Streetkind of an appropriate setting for a band that dabbles in creating serene and rustic (OK, their recent album Songs of Patience also rocks) tunes from their newfound hometown, NYC.

    Year: 2009

    Runtime: 37 min

Summer 2011 saw the release of The Rip Tide on Condons own Pompeii Label, Beiruts first proper LP since The Flying Club Cup. Written in isolation during a snowy upstate winter, the album marked a stark change in emotional direction, that is to say, inward. Reflecting less on the travels and travails borne of the wanderlust struck musician, instead, The Rip Tide has crystallized the sounds of Beiruts past into a cohesive and remarkable whole, all while maintaining the unmistakable aesthetic that has brought them around the world, and home again.

    KT Tunstall

    Year: 2005

    Runtime: 54 min

If Eye To the Telescope introduced a bold new talent, KT Tunstall's Acoustic Extravaganza confirms that the Scottish singer is no fluke. Whether stripping down tracks from her platinum debut--nominated for both a Grammy and Britain's coveted Mercury Prize--or taking on Beck's tender "Golden Age," it's all about the Voice and the Voice is good. While Telescope elicited comparisons to Joni Mitchell and Bjork, in acoustic mode, Tunstall sounds more like countryman Rod Stewart back when he was fronting the Faces. She's got that soulful thing down to a science, but there's nothing affected about it, and she never pushes too hard. Ten years of busking can do that for a girl (it's how she learned to use a loop pedal to duplicate the sound of a full band). Originally only available through her website, Acoustic Extravaganza doesn't include hit singles "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" and "Suddenly I See," the theme from The Devil Wears Prada, but then it isn't a greatest hits collection. Recorded in two days, th set consists primarily of non-LP material, like the angry "Ashes," plus the featurette Five Go to Skye (Making the Album). The parental advisory warning ("explicit content") refers to the profanity in "Ashes." Otherwise, there's nothing objectionable going on here.

  • Striking That Familiar Chord

    Puddle Of Mudd

    Year: 2005

    Runtime: 60 min

Puddle Of Mudd rose from the ashes of alternative metal with the release of their debut album Come Clean in 2001. Having been one of the first acts signed and released by Limp Bizkit front man Fred Dursts label, Flawless Records, Come Clean quickly went multi-platinum and spawned the hit singles Control, Blurry and She Hates Me. Although often grouped with the likes of Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park, Puddle Of Mudds sound is a lot closer to the likes of Nirvana and more traditional hard rock. This was further reinforced by the release of their second album Life On Display in 2003. Striking That Familiar Cord was recorded in the intimate settings of the famous Key Club in Los Angeles, California, capturing the band at their blistering best and featuring the hits Control, Blurry, She Hates Me and Away From Me.

At our request, all the live footage you see in the film is completely unedited; meaning we didn't go back and fix or re-do anything. We felt it should stand or fall on its own merit, and be embraced for what is, which is live music. Who knows, maybe we'll feel differently next year. Staind

    Year: 2007

    Runtime: 1 hr 29 min

Staind dove into bleaker recesses than ever before and surfaced with their heaviest and most hypnotic album to date, STAIND, their self-titled, seventh studio album.
The multi-platinum Massachusetts hard rock outfit Aaron Lewis, Mike Mushok, and Johnny "Old School" April pushed itself to the very brink. There was struggle and strife, but, as a result, Staind constructed a collection of chaotically melodic songs that hearken back to their 1999 major label debut, Dysfunction, while wielding an instrumental and lyrical prowess that could only be cultivated by 16 years of writing, recording, and touring together.

This concert in Cologne Germany is one of just pure raw emotion and the performance is simply amazing. All the songs are sung with emotion drawn on lyrics taken from the lives of these exemplary band members.

    Supergrass

    Year: 2008

    Runtime: 1 hr 16 min

Like many other British bands of the '90s, Supergrass' musical roots lie in the infectiously catchy punk-pop of the Buzzcocks and the Jam, as well as the post-punk pop of Madness and the traditional Brit-pop of the Kinks and Small Faces. the band brings in elements of decidedly unhip groups like Elton John, as well as classic rockers like David Bowie, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones. With an exuberant, youthful enthusiasm, Supergrass tied all of their influences together in new surprising ways, where a Buzzcocks riff could slam into three-part harmonies out of "Crocodile Rock," or have a galloping music hall rhythm stutter like the best moments of the Who.
