Dawes

Year: 2011

Runtime: 00:16:47

Los Angeles rock quartet Dawes are conformed by a great, American musical tradition. Lurking in the folds of their amplified crunch of guitars, road ready rhythms, and soulful blasts of organ lay stories that are weary and lonesome...the product of a life lived out of a suitcase, traveling between far flung places. Laurel Canyon, Woodstock, Haight-Ashbury... You know these places, you know their significance. What started with bands like Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and The Band lives on in Dawes' snarly riffs and stories. Rock and roll's past colliding with the present in the best way possible

That's Dawes, that's their live show, that's their latest release Nothing Is Wrong. Here though, in our latest session vid, the band try on something different...something a bit more informal and intimate. With nothing more than their mighty harmonies and an acoustic guitar, the band gives a glimpse into their most private world with three cuts from Nothing Is Wrong, emulating those moments when guitars are pulled out on tour buses, in hotel rooms, or quiet backstage retreats. After all, Dawes are a traveling band, the kind of group that can't go without that pounding pavement rumbling under their tires. The road, after all, is the greatest musical tradition.

    Childish Gambino

    Year: 2011

    Runtime: 13 min

It's been a crazy year for Donald Glover, but nothing has been more blazing than his career as rapper Childish Gambino. The project, born of a Wu-Tang name generator, is full of witty, rambunctious energy, as he effortlessly demonstrates in his session at Rockwood Music Hall. Along with collaborator and musical guru Ludwig Gransson on electric guitar, Gambino rips through tracks from his wildly popular EP as well as the lead single from his debut album Camp (out now on Glassnote Records). From introspection to love to pop culture and punny metaphors, Gambino runs an impressive lyrical gammit, one that inspires all the vital decision making organs.

    Deer Tick

    Year: 2013

    Runtime: 15 min

Following their weekend residency as Newport Folk Festival's house band, Deer Tick shot down to Manhattan to perform for the Baeble crew in our backyard. The Providence locals hosted and headlined the festival's three consecutive after parties at the Newport Blues Cafe, and on the third evening, the group performed their forthcoming studio record Negativity in its entirety. The following day, frontman John McCauley told us that he couldn't wait until September 23rd, which would be the eve of the album's release. Fast forward a month and a half, and here we all are today, session video in tow, with the impending release of their superb, fifth record less than 24 hours away.

  • A Session With Foals

    Foals

    Year: 2013

    Runtime: 12 min

Being from the rain-ridden lands of England, Foals are used to a different kind of festival environment: generally speaking, frontman Yannis Philippakis described them as "mud and wellies" ordeals. So we're sure they were quite pleased to travel halfway around the world to the California desert to perform for Coachella's music-hungry crowds. Prior to taking to the stage in Indio, however, Foals made a pit stop at our little poolside bungalow to perform a Festival Fever Session featuring songs off their highly-acclaimed, recent full-length Holy Fire. While you might have already seen the band's in-the-flesh transformation of "My Number" into a slow-burning beaut, we've expanded the session to include the subtle closer "Moon".

    Local Natives

    Year: 2010

    Runtime: 32 min

In the exclusive concert performance video we captured on the first night of the band's stint in NYC, the synergetic spirit that binds the band together is evident enough. Clearly, this is not a tribe who are comfortable with their work merely being good enough. Self confessed "control freaks;" the band and their music is the result of a communal creative process. Watching their interpretation of the Talking Heads' "Warning Sign," it's no great stretch to envision the band spending whole evenings working through single vocal passages. The rhythmic pounce of " Wide Eyes" offers a picture of the band studiously aligning cut and paste, percussive contributions so that each hit can synch with one another. And "Sun Hands" speaks to the band's efforts in holding back during one moment, so that another one can ultimately be that much more explosive. Dramatic, endearing, energetic, and impressive: we know you're going to love what is one of the most exciting bands we have ever had the pleasure to capture.

    Flume

    Year: 2013

    Runtime: 32 min

Prior to our event partnership with Hype Machine, we had never explored the idea of shooting a DJ. But after experiencing the up-and-comers who showed face at this year's Hype Hotel, you may see us venturing into the EDM scene more often. After last week's concert release featuring the stellar brothersome UK duo Disclosure, today we're bringing you to the opposite side of the globe for a taste of what Syndney, Australia's been dancing to - FLUME. His real name is Harley Streten, but his musical project suits his moniker precisely as his tone possesses the natural feel of an aquatic flow compacted by a dubby pulse.

During the I Guess I'm Floating/YVYNYL party, FLUME transported Hype Hotel on a swirling trip through his mind-bending beats and electronic mystique, all which can be heard on his debut, self-titled studio album, released late last fall. In our 30-minute concert capture, the young Aussie synth savant will alter your equilibrium, often making you wonder exactly what state of matter you're rushing through - be it water or atmosphere - it's electrifying.

    Passenger

    Year: 2013

    Runtime: 18 min

Mike Rosenberg's crafted some of the very best observational songwriting of the year with his lovely new album, All the Little Lights. It's a lush, acoustic collection he's complemented with the perfect epithet in Passenger. "The lyrics and the stories," explains the young, Brighton-born-and-bred musician, "are told from the perspective of a passenger just watching the world go by." For his stirring session in our music room, Mike spun tales of a lonely afternoon on a riverbank in Glasgow Scotland ("Feather On the Clyde"), the hard appreciation that spawns only in the wake of personal loss ("Let Her Go") and a reminder that the present moment is everything ("Life's for the Living"). It's an emotional performance; a journey you'll be grateful to be a passenger aboard.

  • Live At First Avenue

    Trampled By Turtles

    Year: 2013

    Runtime: 1 hr 14 min

With six albums to their credit and a word-of-mouth reputation that draws legions of die-hard fans to their must-see-to-believe live shows, Minnesota roots music hybrid Trampled by Turtles finally release their first ever, highly anticipated live concert recording – Live at First Avenue. Captured over 3 sold-out nights at the legendary Minneapolis rock venue, First Avenue, celebrating TBT's 10th Anniversary in 2013, this video features songs from all six of Trampled by Turtles' albums, including fan favorites like “Codeine”, "Wait So Long" "Midnight on the Interstate" and TBT's version of the Pixies’ classic, “Where is My Mind?”. While they never set out to be a “bluegrass” band, the band employs the same time-honored tools of the trade – guitar, acoustic bass, banjo, mandolin and fiddle – as their ‘grass-fed country cousins'. But their soul-deep differences in influences, attitude and attack, from their quicksilver, deadly accurate picking to their lonesome, hauntingly spare ballads, make for a very different musical beast indeed.

    The Wild Feathers

    Year: 2013

    Runtime: 26 min

Imagine pointing some beautiful, vintage Mustang convertible down a Middle American highway for a moment. There's a sea of endless prairies and plains stretching out around you. The road; a streak of concrete into the horizon, where the only evidence of civilization exists clustered around gas stations and dive bars at the interstate off ramp. Curiosity gets the best of you and with a flick of the turn signal you're veering off the road right for that roadhouse a place where bikers, truck drivers, and local meat/metal heads, bad ass farmers' daughters, and working-class factory folk all gather when the sun goes down. It's kind of an ultimate American image, right? Shrouded in Red, White, and Blue, cheap beer, and the stench of strong whiskey. And of course there's a band; a swaggering, semi-drunk cyclone of country, blues, folk, and rock whipping all of those colorful characters into an absolute fury. Requires a vivid imagination, I know. But the band? They're very real. They're The Wild Feathers and they're pretty much here to kick your ass.

Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros

    Year: 2012

    Runtime: 29 min

We haven't ever met a band quite like Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros. Their self-professed embrace of child-like wonder is the piston that powers their music, their sunny disposition, and their recognition that every moment is a once in a life time opportunity to create and connect...with themselves, with their wildly enthusiastic followers, or something universally bigger. That shows sell out in their wake everywhere the eleven piece band play is no big surprise. Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros are special, getting more than just a kick out of playing the peppy, folk creations of their debut Up From Below and their recent follow-up Here.

Recently we had the privilege to spend a bit of time with the band during a concert stop for the fine folks of WXPN in Philadelphia. We spoke at length with Edward's bandleader Alexander Ebert and are posting a series of videos all month long. But we also had the opportunity to aim our cameras at the band's performance. Piling all eleven members of the band on stage, Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros showcased a handful of their new, more meditative song fare from Here, as well as made sure to pepper in a few crowd favorites from Up From Below (for old time's sake...). It was a special opportunity. Today we're thrilled to be releasing the full, uninterrupted edit of the band's acoustic-ish performance in Philadelphia. We think you'll find there's nothing else quite like this out there.

  • NME Breakthrough: Florence And The Machine - Brixton Academy, London

    Florence And The Machine

    Year: 2008

    Runtime: 34 min

Hailing from South London, Florence Mary Leontine Welch writes songs that occupy the same confessional territory as gossip-loving, genre-bending contemporaries like Amy Winehouse, Kate Nash, Adele, and Lily Allen and the moody, classic art rock of Kate Bush, blending pop, soul, and baroque arrangements into a sound that earned the young artist considerable buzz in 2007. Managed by the Camden-based DJ duo the Queens of Noize and backed by a rotating lineup of musicians, Florence + the Machine released their debut single, "Kiss with a Fist," on the Moshi Moshi label in June 2008. The critically acclaimed debut album Lungs followed in July 2009 and quickly became one of the year's most popular releases in the U.K., where Florence charted four Top 40 singles in less than 12 months. The songs gathered steam in other parts of the world, too, particularly in America, where "Dog Days Are Over" peaked at number 21, went platinum, and even earned its own performance on the TV show Glee. Lungs was reissued the following year in a two-disc package entitled Between Two Lungs, and included a bonus 12-track disc that featured live versions and remixes. That same year, Florence + the Machine returned to the studio with producer Paul Epworth (Bloc Party, Adele) to begin work on their second full-length outing.

  • Live at The Cutting Room

    Alt-J

    Year: 2012

    Runtime: 22 min

There is something truly unique about the music that pours out of the four lads who comprise the experimental, indie outfit, Alt-J. It has a sparkling, melodious quality in the way the guitars fizzle in a bed of digital mist. But there are odd chanting harmonies, crunchy riffs that'll snap your teeth, and, most notably, a disjointed, percussive approach that's mightier than all. It's all helped to stew a bit of a phenomenon on the band's side of the Atlantic. Why just today the band snatched themselves a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize for their debut, An Awesome Wave (which is just about the best way to describe what lies within). Here in the US, the band is currently spreading the gospel one city at a time. Recently, that meant a quick stop at The Cutting Room Studios in NYC for a live-to-air session with our friends at KEXP Seattle. In its' aftermath, we're obviously converted...and we don't think you stand a chance either.

    Beach Fossils

    Year: 2013

    Runtime: 17 min

The release of their self-titled LP in 2010 introduced the world to Beach Fossils' Dick Dale twanged, New Wave inspired surf rock: a frenetic sound, although then unique, has now become quite prevalent in the indie scene. But where this Brooklyn-based four-piece set themselves apart was through their Johnny Rotten-esque turbulent attitutes: a trait that's been upheld in their 2013 sophomore folow-up, Clash the Truth. Led by the melancholic growl of Dustin Payseur, Beach Fossils embody a liveliness and urgency that's shared by a majority of their generation. We witnessed this energy live in Austin at Hype Machine's Hype Hotel. We suggest sticking around til the final minutes to see the extent of Beach Fossils' volatility - where an explosive bout ends with a crippled drum kit.

    Year: 2008

Oftentimes at live shows, musicians of the indie-rock variety get so caught up in all the strut and swagger that goes along with rock music that they forget to be fun. Deerhunter are not that, as evidenced by their performance here at McCarren Park Pool. On the contrary, front man Bradford Cox is a pretty damn funny guy. And while he may look like a young Thurston Moore without the flowing hair, Deerhunter opt out of your typical art-rock arrogance and instead go for a sonically sound show complete with a driving rhythm section and extra catchy guitar riffs. There's even a nutty vocal spot from Cole Alexander of The Black Lips. Behind Mac DeMarco's torn up jeans, oversized flannel and rambunctious attitude is a magnificent and emotive songwriter. The Canadian artist's debut full-length album, simply called '2', is loaded with jangly guitar rock, which he personally describes as "jizz jazz", as well as simple and relatable lyrics about suburban life.

During this showcase at the Hype Hotel, the rowdy Canadian was in full swing with random outbursts while chugging beers supplied by audience members. Did we mention his set was at 1PM? But this boisterous behavior was juxtaposed as the gentler Dr. Jekyll side of DeMarco's split personality radiated brilliantly through his music.
