On July 1st, 2011, Montreux hosted the reunion of two master guitarists, Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin, with their Invitation To Illumination concert. Both musicians have been regulars at Montreux across the years but this was the first time they headlined their own concert together. The show features most of the tracks from their classic 1973 album Love Devotion Surrender mixed in with a wealth of other material. The evening was a showcase of supreme musical virtuosity and spirituality and typified the approach of these two great artists. It is certainly a performance not to be missed.

    Runtime: 50 min

In an intimate live performance, Kinky joins forces with MTV for their first-ever 'Unplugged' album, featuring a superstar line-up of guests and new versions of their classic hits. Hosted by Diego Luna, the Unplugged album features collaborations with an international crew of stars including Carla Morrison, La Mala Rodríguez, Banda Los Recoditos, Voz de Mando and Beto Zapata (Grupo Pesado). The first single, “A Donde Van Los Muertos?” featuring Carla Morrison debuted #1 upon its release in Mexico. Kinky originally formed in the musically diverse and culturally rich scene of Monterrey, Mexico. More than 10 years ago, Kinky submitted a demo to the LAMC, where they ended up winning the conference's prestigious "LAMC Discovery Contest." The band has received multiple Latin Grammy nominations for their unique and innovative blend of electronic and alternative rock and has been established as a global touring band. Kinky's self-titled debut album received rave reviews from both international and national press. The album featured massive hit songs and much-synched classics such as "Mas" and "Soun Tha Mi Primer Amor.” Kinky’s music has been featured in numerous soundtracks (Man on Fire, Thirteen), TV shows (Gossip Girl, Dexter, Weeds, NCIS, Alias), TV commercials (Motorola, Taco Bell, Smirnoff Ice, Nissan, Honda), and video games like EA Sports' FIFA and Tiger Woods' PGA Tour. Their popular live shows have allowed the band to constantly tour around the world, performing at festivals such as Coachella, Bumbershoot, Outside Lands and many more. “Kinky’s songs ride funk and rock riffs that hark back to the dance-rock of the early 1980s, with a rough edge on keyboards and guitar — but punctuated, every so often, by accordion lines out of Mexican border music. Meanwhile its lyrics fling images of consumerism as brainwashing and distraction, and of partying toward self-destruction, none of which stopped fans from dancing.” – The New York Times

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble

    Year: 1989

    Runtime: 1 hr 2 min

Few guitarists ever mastered the Fender Stratocaster like the late, great Texas bluesman Stevie Ray Vaughan, and this priceless film collects both of the sizzling appearances that Vaughan and his solid band, Double Trouble, made on the PBS concert series Austin City Limits. Combined to form the most popular program in the show's distinguished history, the concerts were taped in 1983 and 1989; both provide a valuable portrait of Vaughan's astounding artistic development. The performances serve as bookends to Vaughan's brilliant career with Double Trouble, showing (in the words of producer Terry Lickona) a striking contrast between "zero self-confidence" and "pure magic," but in both cases you can see a master at work. Songs include "Pride and Joy," "Texas Flood," "Voodoo Chile," "Cold Shot," and "Riviera Paradise." This film also includes the posthumous music video "Little Wing," featuring clips of Double Trouble and archival footage of blues greats from the 1920s to the mid-1990s.

Although he made a successful television comeback, his health was beginning to fail, as he had always expected, following bouts of rheumatic fever in childhood. This knowledge of his vulnerability had always spurred him on to exploit his musical talent while still young. He died at 37, following a heart operation in Los Angeles.

    Various Artists

    Year: 1995

    Runtime: 1 hr 19 min

Already a legend among musicians, Stevie Ray Vaughan was bringing new relevance and popularity to the blues when his career was cut short in a fatal helicopter accident following a 1990 concert appearance. His music offered the drama and sheer firepower of rock, and his flamboyant live shows likewise proved well suited to arena-sized crowds, yet there was little argument that Vaughan's fealty to the blues remained at the core of his style. This 1996 concert tribute underscores that common denominator through muscular performances from contemporary blues masters who readily (and appropriately) confirm the Texas guitarist as a true peer--it's no small matter that bonafide influences Buddy Guy and B.B. King cite the honoree on an equal plane with Vaughan's most obvious rock forebear, Jimi Hendrix.
